ZUMA's Big
Exclusive Sparks Debate Worldwide
April 28, 2004 - San Clemente, CA - Over the past week,
TAMI SILICIO's picture of flag-draped coffins of U.S. soldiers being
loaded into a plane out of Kuwait touched Americans' hearts and souls in
many different ways. Being the exclusive agent for what has come to be
known as the "coffins photo" has put ZUMA
Press on the receiving end of feedback from all sides of the
political spectrum. We've had letters and emails from pro and anti-war
activists, Bush administration loyalists and freedom-of-press
advocates.
"We are proud to represent an image that shows the
truth with no agenda! This image has become the center of so many
emotionally charged discussions. I believe it is healthy for our society
to question censorship vs. privacy issues," said Scott Mc Kiernan,
director and founder of ZUMA Press.
"It's not often that one image can spark such a breadth of debate. As
Silicio's agent, we are representing her wishes to protect its copyright
and doing everything in our power to ensure her image gets as much play as
possible. As I said before, this is an important image, and the public
deserves to see it--no matter what conclusions they draw from it," he
says.
All said and done, the image ran around the world from
China to Finland to Chile. It was licensed to TIME Magazine
(running almost doubletruck style across two pages, see pages 28-29 of the
5/3/04 issue TIME Magazine) and to over 30 major dailies around the
globe, many of which published it on page A1.
In addition to
media requests for the picture, ZUMA
has had an unexpected demand for prints of the image from the general
public. As such, we have made it available for online print orders at a
modest price--go to ZUMA Press' front
page for the link. Proceeds from the print sales are going to a charity
for combat soldiers families.
For more information on licensing
the "coffins photo" or any other ZUMA
Press exclusive, please contact Ruaridh Stewart, ZUMA's picture desk manager at

Despite the negative publicity surrounding
the neck-breaking sucker punch of Vancouver Canuck Todd Bertuzzi on
Colorado Avalanche forward Steve Moore, NHL action appears as rough as
ever!
Check out the beating Toronto Maple Leafs player DARCY
TUCKER endured during a game against the Ottawa Senators. Most would say
the bruises were worth it as the Leafs won the game 2-0.
|
The action continued this week in the
Western Conference semifinals as the Calgary Flames beat the Detroit Red
Wings 2-1. Above, Red Wing MATHIEU SCHNEIDER checks Calgary Flame OLEG
SAPRYKIN; Red Wing CHRIS CHELIOS slams Flame JEROME IGINLA; Red Wing KIRK
MALTBY takes out Flame CHUCK KOBASEW.
Keep checking in with
ZUMA Press for more hot NHL
coverage!
