ZUMA's EROS HOAGLAND Joins the Battle in Iraq |
 |
June 16, 2004 - San Clemente, CA - The official handover of sovereignty to Iraq is quickly approaching. Iraq's future is hanging
in the balance. In preparation, ZUMA Press is proud to add photojournalist EROS HOAGLAND to its team to help cover events as
they unfold.
Hoagland's photojournalist career started in 1994. Assignments from Newsweek, Frontline TV, the Los Angeles Times, New York Times,
San Francisco Chronicle, Fader Magazine, Washington Post, the Associated Press and Amnesty International have taken him to Colombia, El
Salvador, Eritrea, Haiti and the Middle East. Hoagland specializes in reportage photography in countries in conflict, with an emphasis on creating images
strikingly different from the typical news photo. Look out for great things from Eros!
Hoagland joins ZUMA's ROBERT KING, who is currently in his fourth month in Iraq. King is reigning supreme, making great sets
of images in the toughest of conditions. A prime example is this week's Newsweek, where he has a strong two-page spread. His images and text give an
account of First Cavalry's quick-reaction force responding to an emergency scene where two soldiers were killed (see the June 21, 2003 issue, pages 54-55).
When he's not abroad, Hoagland is based in the San Francisco Bay area where he is a frequent contributor to the award-winning San Jose Mercury News. He
joined ZUMA in 2004.
Both Robert King and Eros Hoagland are available for assignments in Iraq and elsewhere in the region. For more information, please call Scott Mc Kiernan,
ZUMA's director and founder, at 949.494.7704.

Cali Gangs Rule El Salvador

ZUMA is proud to represent Eros Hoagland's reportage archive--including this story which takes us inside the gangs of El Salvador.
Full text for these and his other works is available upon request. Here is an excerpt written by Hoagland himself.
The streets of El Salvador are swelling with California's gangs. During the 1980s, thousands of young Salvadoran war refugees were raised in the midst of Chicano
gang culture. Many of these young immigrants joined gangs. When El Salvador's war ended in 1992, U.S. courts began deporting Salvadorans convicted of gang-related
crimes back to El Salvador. The floodgates had been opened, and in the last 10 years, thousands of gang members have been sent "home" to a country they hardly know.
Finding themselves separated from their families in a strange land, these young people have re-created their gangs as a support system and a wall of physical
protection from the extreme violence of post-war El Salvador.
