Marissa Roth Brings Real L.A. to ZUMA |
 |
June 23, 2004 - San Clemente, CA - ZUMA Press is proud to announce exclusive, worldwide representation
of award-winning photojournalist MARISSA ROTH.
Marissa, a proud L.A. native, has worked as a freelance assignment photojournalist since 1981 and has covered major historical events such as the L.A. riots, the
1989 coup attempt in the Philippines and the first post-Communist elections in Hungary in 1991. Her images graced the pages of many of the world's greatest
publications.
Her slick reportage style is seen in any number of Roth's published work, including these books: Burning Heart: A Portrait of the Philippines (Rizzoli, 1999),
Real City: Downtown Los Angeles Inside/Out (Angel City Press, 2001) and Come the Morning (Wayne State University Press, 2005). Roth has immediate plans
for four books. Stay tuned for updates on those as they approach publication.
Over the years, Roth has been recognized by the Industry numerous times, but she is best known for her L.A. riots coverage, which contributed to the Los Angeles Times' Pulitzer Prize for Best Spot News in 1992.
"Be it a lawless riot or an environmental portrait, Marissa manages to capture the feeling and mood of each subject with her elegant style," says Scott Mc Kiernan,
director and founder of ZUMA Press.
Commenting on her decision to join ZUMA, Roth says, "I am impressed at how the company has grown over the last 10 years. It was a
clear choice for me. ZUMA has a good reputation in the Industry...[ZUMA] is a credible agency that
is big enough to land the cover of TIME Magazine, yet retain a personal touch, dedicating time to work with photographers on their stories."
Roth debuts with ZUMA with an in-depth story inside the California Institution for Women in Corona. In this maximum-security prison,
inmates contribute to society by training service dogs to help the disabled. The program, administered in partnership with the Canine Support Teams, a nonprofit
organization, is the first of its kind in California.
Currently, Roth works on assignment for the New York Times and TIME Magazine, among other publications. She also continues to add to her long-term
projects: covering Hollywood from its starlets to its behind-the-scenes action; homelessness in L.A.; and the plight of women around the world whose lives are impacted by war.
Her photographic archive is now available for editorial licensing through ZUMA Press. To view more of her work, click

Z Reportage Update

The outcome of the U.S.-led coalition and its impending turnover to Iraq's interim government rests on the shoulders of the newly, trained Iraqi Civil Defense
Corps (ICDC). Can the coalition's three-week training course transform out-of-shape Iraqi civilians into the brute force necessary to stabilize Iraq and its
24 million residents? To view more, click here.
