Les Stone's Voodoo Heads for the Highlands |
 |
July 01, 2004 - San Clemente, CA - ZUMA Press is very proud to have secured another solo exhibition at
the St. Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art, which is part of the prestigious Glasgow Museums family in Scotland, for one of our elite reportage stories. Glasgow
Museums will exhibit the vivid, graphic and comprehensive Haitian Voodoo Religion or Black Magic by one-of-a-kind photojournalist
LES STONE.
This same body of work received Honorary Merit as a Web Feature Picture Story in NPPA's 2004 Best of Photojournalism competition for
ZUMA's longtime client AOL in their new photojournalism showcase VISIONS.
This is the second museum show ZUMA has gotten for one of its photographers. St. Mungo Museum will showcase the 21st Century
Ku Klux Klan by photojournalist JAMES EDWARD BATES, as we reported in our
June 2, 2004, newsletter.
"This is Les' first one-man museum show and to add to the understanding as well as the depth of his amazing reportage, and, of course, for those whom can not make
the show in Scotland, ZUMA is publishing a high-end coffee-table picture book to show his amazing passion of Haiti and especially
voodoo," said Scott Mc Kiernan, director and founder of ZUMA's zReportage.com.
"The book will accompany this big show. We are very excited on making this happen. Kudos to Les and his wild and wonderful images!"
Voodoo is deeply rooted in the Caribbean island of Haiti. Although it has been practiced for hundreds of years and was recognized by Haitian officials as an
official religion in 2003, it is still widely misunderstood around the world.
Stone, who still considers the documentary a work in progress, made more than 30 visits to Haiti over 10 years to photograph its sacred traditions and rituals.
"Even though I've witnessed countless voodoo ceremonies and done an exceptional amount of research on the topic, there is still more I would like to go back and
photograph," says Stone. "I couldn't claim any expertise in describing the complex pantheon of gods that are worshiped in Haiti. I can say, however, that visually
the voodoo ceremony is incredibly exciting to witness and photograph. It's very positive and beautiful and no more superstitious than many of the practices of the
Catholic church, of which Haitian voodoo in particular is tied very closely."
Voodoo Religion or Black Magic will exhibit at the St. Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art from May to October 2006. For more

Training for Terror

As the start of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens nears, the Greek police force is undergoing extensive training to avoid any possible disaster or terrorist
scenario. This is the first Olympic Summer Games to be held since 9-11, and keeping the Games safe is a major concern. The security budget for Athens is three
times higher than the Sydney Games and six times higher than Atlanta.
ZUMA Press photographer NIKOS PILOS spent time with the top security forces in Greece: the Special Anti-Terrorism Unit, the
Department of Explosive Devices Disposal and the Police Dog Unit. To view the complete story, click here.

Z Entertainment Tearsheets

ZUMA photographer JANICE P. YIM did a great job covering the Olympic torch relay at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. She was so good,
in fact, that People Weekly ran her shot of TOM CRUISE with the torch almost full page! See the July 5, 2004, issue, page 12. Nice work Janice!
ZUMA content partner in celebrity candids, MOST WANTED PICTURES, continues to deliver great coverage entertainment's hottest stars,
uncensored. Just this week US Weekly ran a double-page spread of MOST WANTED'S story on actor RYAN PHILLIPPE, Reese Witherspoon's husband, at the beach with
their daughter Ava. (See US Weekly, July 5, 2004, page 16).
