ZUMA's JOHN ROWLANDS School of Rock
July 07, 2004 - San Clemente, CA - Elvis may have left the building, but he rocks on with ZUMA Press. ZUMA is proud to sign the king of rock photography, JOHN ROBERT ROWLANDS.

Rowlands' real-life story is wilder than the movie Almost Famous. He began his career as a photographer when he was a teenager working with the great icons like Elvis and the Beatles. At the age of 13, Rowlands' hobby of taking concert photos turned into a career move when he made his first editorial sale to 16 Magazine. His fast-paced lifestyle had him on the road touring with bands one week and making up the missed school hours in the detention hall the week after.

Rowlands' 40-year-career highlights are like a whirlwind fantasy. Some of his first gigs included touring with the Beatles in 1965 and 1966 for Capitol Records, covering five Rolling Stones tours for London Records and later Warner Brothers (WEA) and doing onstage photo shoots with Elvis for promotional, program and special-product album jackets.

All said, Rowlands shot 106 album and CD covers ranging from Jimi Hendrix, Elvis and the Beatles to BB King, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Cyndi Lauper, Diana Ross and Kenny Rogers.

"John was there for the birth of rock 'n' roll, and he brings it to us through great moments, one after another, after another. His body of work is spectacular! I am proud to rep the ultimate jukebox of pictures--over four decades of rock. Each image evokes memories, trends in music and pop-culture past. His work is truly a great contribution to our recorded history, and we are very honored to represent it," said Scott Mc Kiernan, director and founder of ZUMA Press.

Rowlands continues his music, entertainment and studio-portrait photography based out of the Palm Springs, California, area. For editorial licensing of his imagery or to book him for an assignment, please call Trish Murphy, ZUMA's VP of sales, at 949.494.7704. To view more of his work, click here.

ZUMA's Female Photojournalists Honored

Please join us in congratulating our newest talent, MARISSA ROTH, and our very own photographer liaison, MARIANNA DAY MASSEY. Both were selected as part of the 15th Annual Women in Photojournalism contest. Take a bow, ladies!

The theme of the contest was "legacies."

Roth's winning picture, "First Lady of the Philippines," shows former President Corazon Aquino--the first female president of the Philippines--smiling from inside her car.

Massey's winning image, "The Gauchos of Argentina," shows Maria Garcia, the young daughter of gaucho farm owner Hugo Garcia, as she rides and trains her horse in a field nearby their working farm in Campana, Argentina. Their farm is one of the few that have not been taken over by wealthy landowners in nearby Buenos Aries.

Both of these images will be on display as part of an exhibition that will coincide with the 15th Annual Women in Photojournalism Conference August 27-29, 2004, at the Hyatt Regency/Crown Center in Kansas City, Missouri.

In addition, the show will be part of Kansas City's "First Fridays" on August 6, 2004. On that day, the galleries in Kansas City's Crossroads Art District stay open from 7-9 p.m. Crowds of art lovers will spend the evening strolling through the galleries as well as area restaurants and shops. The NPPA is honored to have the winners invited to be a part of this popular event.

Kudos to our winners and special thanks to ZUMA's other leading ladies: NANCY KASZERMAN (who was awarded the same honor for ZUMA last year), KRISTA KENNELL and JODI JONES for sending in a great selection of images for us to enter in this contest. Without such consistently outstanding content, ZUMA wouldn't be as great as it is today!.
