JACK KURTZ Brings New West to ZUMA |
 |
July 21, 2004 - San Clemente, CA - ZUMA Press is proud to announce our latest edition to the fold,
JACK KURTZ. Kurtz, who is based in Phoenix, Arizona, is a longtime newspaper photojournalist and contributor to Impact Digitals.
Kurtz is focused on exploring the dynamics of the American Southwest and Mexico. He has created unique features on the evolution of the West from the agricultural
"Old West" to the development-driven "New West," with emphasis on America's relationship with Mexico--a relationship depicted visually with in-depth reportage on
border issues, illegal immigration and exploration of themes like shared cultures and the effects of NAFTA.
Kurtz has also reported from Nicaragua, Haiti, the Philippines and Cuba. His work has run in the New York Times, the Washington Post, Newsweek,
TIME, U.S. News & World Report and other publications around the world. To view more of his work, click

It Ain't Greece, it's Georgia!
Fifteen thousand people gathered for the 9th Annual Redneck Games in East Dublin, Georgia. Highlights of the Redneck
Games, which began as a spoof of the Olympics in nearby Atlanta, included hubcap and toilet-lid tosses, bobbing for pigs' feet and an armpit serenade for kids.

Health Care on the Front
Defying the orders of the Israeli army, the Israeli-based group Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) provides much-needed health
care to Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip. PHR's mobile clinic, which works in cooperation with Palestinian medical organizations, has
treated thousands of patients, providing free examinations, primary and secondary care, basic medicine and baby formula, among other services. To view more from

zHOT Tear Sheets

ZUMA tear sheets are hot, hot, hot! When the mob of photographers snapped away at BEYONCE KNOWLES as she entered 40/40 Club for
their first anniversary party in New York, she couldn't have hoped for anything better than ending up in a full-page spread in In Touch Weekly (see the July
12, 2004 issue, page 48)! Kudos to ZUMA photographer DAN HERRICK for taking this great portrait on the fly!
In our hot full-page tear sheet #2, ZUMA Reportage photojournalist JAMES EDWARD BATES tried his hand as a paparazzi shooter and
did pretty well. This head-turning candid of PARIS HILTON and NICOLE RICHIE filming scenes for The Simple Life 2 was showcased in
Us Weekly (see the July 26, 2004 issue, page 36). Nice work, James!

zReportage Update

Southern Colombia is the cocaine producing capital of the world. Drug farms have attracted leftist guerrillas and right-wing paramilitaries whose brutal
fight to control narcotics resources is destroying the social fabric of the region. Colombia has been scorched by war for decades, but in the last ten years
violence has taken an accelerated path in the form of daily civilian massacres carried out by both guerrillas and paramilitaries. The war's most regular
victims are non-combatants coerced into some kind of business relationship with a given faction and then accused as collaborators by the other side. To
