Sudan's Genocide: A Population Under Siege |
 |
August 12, 2004 - San Clemente, CA - ZUMA Press has broadened its coverage of the humanitarian crisis
in Sudan by signing on to exclusively represent the work of photojournalist JAMES NICHOLLS. Nicholls, who's based in New York, focuses on
capturing the moments that elevate awareness of crises around the world.
Nicholls has made numerous trips to the Sudan, spending months a time in the region, since 1999. His first story available via
ZUMApress.com,
Sudan's Genocide: A Population Under Siege, bares witness to the forced
starvation, mass murder and enslavement of non-Muslims.
ZUMA editors are working hard to caption and load additional reportage by Nicholls, including: The Hidden People of Sudan
--a cultural look at the people of the Nuba Mountains and the persecution they have endured for more than six years; and The Hidden Gift: Faith in
Sudan--the story of the Catholic Bishop Gassis, who risks his life to aid the Nuba people by providing agricultural support, medical assistance and
continuing faith.
Nicholls' photography of Sudan is featured in three documentaries and has exhibited extensively around the world. Beyond Sudan, Nicholls has reported from
Bosnia, Palestine and other regions in conflict. He is currently working on a book project and is available for assignments through ZUMA Press. For more
information, please call Trish Murphy at 949.494.7704.

Les Stone
LES STONE is just back from Alaska where he spent two weeks covering the first Greenpeace environmental action against clear-cutting in Tongass National
Forest. Seven Greenpeace activists chained themselves to logging machinery and were arrested for interfering with the national forest system and blocking
a public road. The protest at Tongass was part of Greenpeace's broader campaign calling for a moratorium on large-scale logging operations on public
lands.
Robert King
ROBERT KING is back from Iraq and currently working on an economic story on the towns and villages in Mississippi that influenced the Civil Rights Movement.

zReportage Update

ATHENS Olympic Police State
The central district of Athens, Omonia, is the hotspot for tourists and will be the hub for athletes and fans alike during the Olympic Games. Home to the hip
restaurants, bars and clubs, Omonia also has the most zealous, police precinct in Athens. Officers of the "Fourth" precinct patrol the streets with renewed
vigor using whatever force necessary to give its turf the best face for the Games. All illegal vendors, drug addicts, homeless people and other "undesirables"
are arrested or escorted out of view from Olympic visitors. To view more, click here.
