Front, Center and Behind: Olympic Coverage |
 |
August 26, 2004 - San Clemente, CA - ZUMA is the complete package for Olympic sports coverage, features, and everything else going on in Athens.
This week's feed includes a sizzling, collection of 30 nude Dutch sport personalities, shot by photographer, EWOUD BROEKSMA, and brought to us by UPPA. Check out these unique portraits and see if you can spot a few Olympic medal contenders! Broeksma's work is currently exhibiting at the Groninger Museum in Groningen, Netherlands.
ZUMA photographer NIKOS PILOS went behind the scenes in the Olympic Village, where more than 360 athletes took advantage of spa services in preparation for TV interviews and performances. Athletes enjoyed convenient access to manicures, pedicures, and make-up artists but hair stylists were the ones in the highest demand.
Meanwhile, tourists and Greeks alike reveled in the non-stop, public entertainment at free concerts, street performances and dances held around downtown Athens.
As the end of the Games approach, emotions run high. Below, YAO MING howls during the game in which China eliminated world champion, Serbia-Montenegro, at the Helliniko Indoor Arena. Italian gold medal winner VALENTINA VEZZALI holds her foil high after defeating Giovanna Trillini in the all-Italian fencing final. Russian IRINA KORZHANENKO put her best put forward to win the gold medal but ended up having the medal stripped for steroid use. U.S. gold medal winner JOANNA HAYES collapses in joy at setting an Olympic record time of 12.37 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles final.
Who's Shooting What
David Gross

DAVID GROSS took a summer break from his book project on missing persons and mass graves in countries of conflict to hop aboard a freighter from Istanbul, Turkey to Trieste, Italy. It's not easy to make strong photos of a freight ship and sailors but his black and white photos are engaging and beautiful. He perfectly captures what looks like a relatively casual at sea adventure on a computer-controlled ship as it delivers its freight of trucks to Italy. Text available upon request.
Krista Kennell

ZUMA's Assistant Managing Editor, KRISTA KENNELL, is working on a story about LA Surf Bus, a group run by MARY SETTERHOLM (center image). LA Surf Bus gives inner city kids, ranging in ages from seven to seventeen, an opportunity to develop an appreciation for the ocean while learning to surf and body board.
ZUMA photographer RICHARD SOBOL will be in Asia (Nepal, Thailand and China) from October through November. Sobol will be accompanied by writer, LOUISA KASDON. Their plans include an in-depth look at the tailor district of Bangkok, origins of Thai cuisine and life on the river, Chao Paraya. To book SOBOL for an Asian assignment, call Trish Murphy at 949.494.7704.
