ZUMA's Award-Winning Sports Division Grows Leaps and Bounds |
 |
September 9, 2004 - San Clemente, CA - Today ZUMA Press announced a content partnership with Icon Sports Media, Inc., a
leading digital sports press photography agency and wire service. ZUMA now syndicates Icon's award-winning sports imagery worldwide,
excluding France, Italy and Japan.
Founded in 1999 by former Allsport/Getty employees and sports-photography veterans, Icon captures the defining moments of professional, college and amateur sports and
star athletes. Beginning today, Icon's daily news feeds will be pushed over ZUMA's international wire service, and in the weeks
ahead, Icon's image archive will be phased into ZUMA's cutting-edge online image database for access by ZUMA
clients around the globe.
"I am very pleased about closing this deal with Icon Sports Media," says SCOTT MC KIERNAN, ZUMA's director and founder. "The agency
has done a stellar job of attracting high-end action shooters like Tom Hauck, John Cordes and Tony Donaldson, among others. With such great content, I am confident we
can grow their international presence," he says.
Today's partnership with Icon follows two other content deals ZUMA made with top sports agencies abroad: Empics (U.K.) and Panoramic
Agence de Presse (France).
ZUMA Sports Coverage Honored
The Sixth Annual Sports Shooter 2003 contest winners were announced this week, and ZUMA came in among the top.
Please join us in congratulating COR VOS for winning the Sports Action: Award of Excellence for his aerial shot of cyclists competing in the Tour of Qatar.

Tragic Ending to Russia Hostage Crisis

Turn to ZUMA for moving coverage of the horrifying siege and its aftermath delivered by photojournalists of Russia's largest picture
agency, Kommersant. Though the immediate crisis is over, mourning over the loss of life and public discontent about the continuing terrorist threat continues. Stay
with us for coverage of these and other developments in the region.

chief, at 212.366.4343.
Post Coverage Shines Through the Storm!

Hurricane Frances hit Florida hard this past week. Kudos go out to the Palm Beach Post photo team for doing an exceptional job of braving the hurricane to
capture the trail of destruction left behind.
Standby for coverage of Hurricane Ivan, the third major hurricane to approach Florida this season.
Dispatch from Perpignan, France

The 16th International Festival of Photojournalism, Visa Pour l'Image Perpignan, went off without a hitch in France last week, and ZUMA
was well represented at this most influential industry event.
SCOTT MC KIERNAN, Picture Desk Manager RUARIDH STEWART and numerous ZUMA photojournalists, including NADAV NEUHAUS from Israel,
DAVID GROSS from Turkey and JAMES NICHOLLS from New York, were in attendance.
DAVID LEVERTON and GRAHAM CROSS, founders of eyevine--
zReportage's major partner--were also at Perpignan, along with their strong repertoire of reportage and portrait
shooters.
With all other major ZUMA, Keystone and
zReportage partners present from around the world, the event provided a great opportunity to
renew ties and forge new business relationships. Stay tuned for more on these in the weeks ahead!
As planned, the first set of DOUBLEtruck Magazines to roll off the presses were express-shipped to France for debut at the festival. The magazine was definitely
well received by all who managed to get hold of a copy (issues went flying off the table at the Canon booth--faster than we could replenish them!).
The long week of schmoozing ended with a bang for ZUMA. The grand finale evening slide show of the most compelling images of the year
featured the work of at least two ZUMA photojournalists, including ROBERT KING's coverage of Iraq and LES STONE's reportage on the
violence in Haiti!
