The Sporting News Selects ZUMA as Exclusive Worldwide Agent
October 7, 2004 - San Clemente, CA - ZUMA Press, the largest independent press agency and wire service, is proud to
announce it beat out competing agencies for exclusive worldwide rights to syndicate the picture content of the award-winning weekly the Sporting News
(SN). With more than 700,000 hard-hitting images dating back over 118 years, the deal is a major win for ZUMA's booming
sports division.
In the coming weeks, the Sporting News archive will be incorporated into ZUMA's e-commerce Website
(ZUMApress.com) and made available for immediate syndication by clients around the world.
Highlights include iconic portraits of baseball's early stars by CHARLES M. CONLON, plus more than 300,000 historical, black-and-white images that document
baseball throughout most of the 20th century and nearly as many images covering football, basketball and hockey.
In addition to the Sporting News' legacy images, ZUMA's sports wire will "push" their weekly picture production to
editorial clients and partners worldwide. The mix of baseball, basketball, football, hockey and NASCAR action, plus, incredible sports portraiture provided
by SN staff shooters JAY DROWNS, BOB LEVERONE, ROBERT SEALE, and chief photographer ALBERT DICKSON among others, is sure to have international appeal.
"We chose ZUMA as our photo agency because of its standards for high quality photography and excellent marketing reach in both
national and international markets. We're fortunate to have some of the best sports photographers in the country and ZUMA will
give readers outside the Sporting News a chance to see their images," said Fred Barnes Sporting News Director of Graphics.
"I am proud to kick off our relationship by securing the Sporting News its first ever cover of TIME Magazine," says Scott Mc Kiernan,
director and founder of ZUMA Press. "The stellar portrait of Ichiro Suzuki by SN's ALBERT DICKSON debuted in the October
11 issue in Japan. The TIME cover is a perfect example of how ZUMA Press will expand the international reach and exposure for Sporting News images."
"As the agent for the Sporting News, several major sports picture agencies and dozens of North American and international dailies,
ZUMA has reached major-league status as a leading global source of top sports photography," says Mc Kiernan.

EROS HOAGLAND
Congratulations to ZUMA's EROS HOAGLAND for being selected as one of 100 photojournalists to participate in the XVII Annual
Eddie Adams Workshop, "Barnstorm," to be held this weekend. The late Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Eddie Adams created the workshops as a forum to share
ideas, techniques and philosophies between both established members and newcomers to the profession of picture journalism.
This will be the first Barnstorm to be held since the legend's passing on September 19, 2004.
Hoagland, who befriended Adams at the '94 Republican convention, says, "I'm sad that I won't be able to see Eddie again. But while he won't be at the Barnstorm
in body, I'm sure the workshop will be charged with emotion, love and a deep appreciation of his legacy."

Breaking the Bond: Inside Prison Gangs
Segregation by race and gang affiliation provides a greater sense of security for inmates attempting to drop out of gang life inside California's maximum-security
prisons. Since 1999, an increasing number of disenchanted gang inmates have sought special protection for fear of certain death for renouncing their gangs. In
Sensitive Needs Housing, inmates from all races now mix freely with considerably less racial violence, allowing for more freedom and respect for one another.
