ZUMA Features Reach the Top
October 13, 2004 - San Clemente, CA - ZUMA reaches the top of the world with exclusive representation of the photo documentary of NAWANG SHERPA, the first amputee to reach the summit of Mt. Everest. Four years ago, a motorcycle wreck left Nawang, an aspiring high-altitude guide in Nepal, an amputee. With the help of UC San Francisco, followed by additional support from the High Exposure Foundation, Nawang received a prosthetic leg and achieved his dream of making it to the top of the world! His colorful photos show his group's progress from base camp to the summit.

ZUMA's lead Nepalese shooter, MUKUNDA BOGATI, rounds-off the feature with intimate portraits of Nawang preparing for his ascent. To view more, click here.

Emmanuel Fradin--The Latin Paradise

One of the oldest and most sensuous cabaret performances in Paris is "Paradis Latin," or the Latin Paradise. ZUMA photographer EMMANUEL FRADIN takes us inside the marvelous theater which was rebuilt in 1889 by Gustave Eiffel, the creator of the Eiffel Tower--to give us a glimpse at the world-famous burlesque performance. Leticia Valverdes/eyevine--Rio Funk: The Music of Sex, Drugs and Poverty

Rio funk is a crude collage of Miami bass and rap. This paired-down anti-music, made on simple machines, has almost identical rhythms and tunes, no grace of delivery and shouted lyrics, which are predominantly crude and sexual. Photographer LETICIA VALVERDES says that depending on whom you talk to, funk is either Rio's richest contemporary cultural movement or a dangerous hotbed of delinquency. "It's the music of choice not just for the urban poor but also for the armed drug gangs who control the favelas, or inner-city slums," she says.

To view more of Valverdes' reportage on gang-organized Rio funk and portraits of TEJO, BLACK ALIEN and SPEED, producers and authors of the recently released Rio funk track "Quem Que Caguetou?" (remixed by Fatboy Slim as 'Follow Me Follow Me'), click here.
