ZUMA in the House |
 |
October 21, 2004 - San Clemente, CA - ZUMA Press, Inc., the largest independent press agency and wire service of
award-winning imagery, and International Published Photos Inc. (iPPi), a leading print-fulfillment company based in Dallas, Texas, announced that iPPi will
offer selects from ZUMA's image archive for wall art print sales.
iPPi will tap its industry-renowned sales expertise to select suitable images from ZUMA, including sets from the century-deep
Keystone Pictures archive, and market them as home or office wall art through iPPi's powerful, customized Content Distribution Network (CDN). iPPi's CDN maximizes
sales opportunities by targeting multiple channels simultaneously, including mail-order catalogs, specialty retail imaging marketers and retailers and iPPi's
numerous publishing clients, among others.
Additionally, iPPi will host and operate a ZUMA news photo reprints service (see:
http://ZUMApress.PublishedPhotos.net) where visitors can order superior quality
custom-made-to-order digital prints of almost any size on Fuji Crystal archive professional grade stock, matted and framed to museum-quality standards
in an array of colors and materials.
"iPPi's success at creating the dynamic USA TODAY print-sales platform and building the New York Times prints division to the largest in the country, convinced
me that iPPi's proactive sales and marketing approach is light years ahead of the pack," says Scott Mc Kiernan, director and founder of
ZUMA Press, Inc.. "I am proud to add iPPi as an additional revenue-stream for our photographers and content partners."
About iPPi
Founded in 2001, International Published Photos, Inc. (iPPi), is the leading fulfillment company for image-rich publications and archives that choose to sell
their images, either framed or unframed, to their circulation, readership and licensees. iPPi's pro lab utilizes the latest software "sauce" to produce superb
images from either Fuji Frontier or LightJet professional printers. With a framing capacity of over 5,000 prints per day, iPPi framing exceeds the needs of even
the largest volume orders. iPPi markets a collection of images through its customized Content Distribution Network (CDN) that targets publishing clients,
mail-order catalogs and other specialty retail imaging marketers. iPPi provides these behind-the-scenes services to major publishers, including the New
York Times, USA Today, Chicago Tribune, AIR&SPACE/Smithsonian Magazine and Hearst Publications, among others.
iPPi was founded by professional-photography, industry icon Ray DeMoulin, a VP of Kodak Professional Imaging Group for many years and the founder of the Digital
Imaging Center in Camden, Maine, along with Sam Attenberg, an inventor, entrepreneur and consultant in the photo industry. Henry Wilhelm of Wilhelm Research in
Grinnell, Iowa, set the quality standards for iPPi and much of the print industry.

Chillin' at the Ice Bar

The newly chiseled "Ice Bar" received a warm opening in Milan, Italy, this week. Before entering the bar, which is made from blocks of ice cut from the Torne river
in Sweden, patrons are required to don a floor-length furry parka. Ice Bar is expected to last six months before melting. It will be rebuilt after that. Photos

Eco-Friendly Extremes

Deep in the south of India, Green Magic Nature Resort in Wayanad Hills, Kerala, has built an eco-friendly accommodation for environmentally conscious travelers.
Situated on 500 acres of pristine, verdant tropical rain forest, the resort offers electricity- and generator-free units 86 feet above ground level for US$200.00
per night. The rooms are lit with kerosene lamps. Solar panels provide auxiliary lighting, and the resort's six bulls create enough dung to provide traditional
Indian bio-gas for cooking. The tree houses not only blend beautifully with the environment but also provide a safe haven away from mosquitoes, predators and
the occasional Indian tiger. Photos by DAVE YOUNG/eyevine/ZUMA Press.
Dead Decor

Human bones, not paintings and murals, decorate the Sedlec Ossuary, a small Christian chapel located in the graveyard of the Church of All Saints in the Czech
Republic. In the 13th century, many people pilgrimaged to Sedlec and brought their dead and dying relatives to the town to be buried. During the Bubonic Plague,
thousands of people were buried there and the graveyard quickly overflowed. The ossuary was built around 1511, and legend has it that a half blind monk was
given the task of making more room for bodies in the ground by removing skeletons from the graveyard and creating elaborate pyramids with the bones. In 1870,
the Schwarzenberg family bought Sedlec monastery and hired Frantisek Rint to make the extraordinary decorations that can be seen today, which include the
Schwarzenberg coat of arms, Rint's own signature and a chandelier that is supposedly made up of every bone in the human body. Photos by JERZY DABROWSKI-ONS/ZUMA Press.

zReportage Update

The Leftover People
This week, we are proud present a special six-month project of the Sacramento Bee: the Leftover People.
The families of Hmong veterans, who were recruited by the CIA in the 1960s to fight a secret war against the Communists in Laos, are the Vietnam War's forgotten
remnants.
After 45 years, the U.S. is finally repaying its debt to the Hmong. From third-world squatter camps to new beginnings in the U.S., 16,000 Hmong refugees are being
relocated to America to start their lives anew. All are poor, most are illiterate and few have marketable skills. But for the first time in decades, they are free.
