Ninth Inning, with Two Men on, the Pitcher Winds Up...
October 27, 2004 - San Clemente, CA - In the run-up to next week's presidential elections, editors everywhere, including our very own, are taking stock of who's shooting what and where while preparing retrospectives on the campaigns of both the Bush/Cheney and Kerry/Edwards camps.

At press time, ZUMA can proudly confirm election-night coverage from a host of sources with emphasis on the most contested states. Included will be image feeds from leading dailies, including Ohio's Plain Dealer, Texas' San Antonio Express-News, Florida's Palm Beach Post, Pennsylvania's Philadelphia Daily News, Minnesota's Minneapolis Star Tribune, North Carolina's News & Observer and more.

ZUMA's elite family of photojournalists will be on standby for assignments throughout the night. LES STONE, DON MURRAY AND ROBERT KING among many others will be covering election-related news as it unfolds.

Who's Shooting What

LISA KRANTZ

During this very polarizing election, the San Antonio Express-News set out to get alternative election coverage that didn't look like everyone else's and captured a sense of the mood of America. After much discussion, the Texas daily dispatched photojournalist LISA KRANTZ and a reporter on two separate trips to six different bellwether counties--ones that have selected each past president--starting in New Mexico and finishing in Philadelphia.

The challenge was to make this piece look different. Express-News Director of Photography DOUG SEHRES and Photo Editor ANITA BACA suggested a few different medium format plastic cameras for the job. Krantz eventually settled on a very simple $15 Holga film camera.

"The Holga has imperfections, but that was the look we were going for. Her assignment was to make a photo album that gave us a sense of the country. As you can see, [Krantz] was very successful, and the results speak for themselves," says Sehres.

"While editing, we realized we had something like a quilt. We had all squares to work with, but each had its own content. When put together, they tell the story, just like the stitched-together squares of a quilt," he says.

Morzine: A French Winter Wonderland

ZUMA's ready to hit the slopes with its first snowy feature of the year, Morzine: A French Winter Wonderland by TARTRAT/Colorise. It is rumored that Morzine became a tourist attraction after a group of Geneva-based diplomats fell under its spell in the early 1900s. FranÁois Baud, proprietor of the Grand Hotel--the first establishment built for tourists in the 1920s--has modernized facilities at the resort while retaining the original appearance of a mountain village from times past. Wood facades, carved balconies and slate-covered roofs are some of the charming features of this getaway destination. Click here to view more.

zPeople

Thousands of professionals who gathered at PhotoPlus Expo in New York last week were greeted by a larger-than-life-size image at the Fujifilm booth that was photographed by ZUMA's newest recruit, SALEM KRIEGER.

Krieger's work was recently selected from among hundreds of entries for the prestigious placement at PhotoPlus. Fuji will be one of Krieger's sponsors this year, supplying him with the new 35mm Fuji S3 Pro Digital Camera that provides a 12 MB file capture. More of his images will be in Fuji's upcoming promotional and marketing programs, offering great exposure for Krieger's work. Congratulations Salem!

Contrary to a statement made in our October 21 newsletter, ZUMA's new wall-art print-fulfillment contractor, iPPi, did not in fact build the New York Times print division to the largest in the country. iPPi was the Times' color-print supplier for a period of time and presently provides their front-page reprint and framing fulfillment.
