ZUMA's Red, White and Blue Landslide! |
 |
November 3, 2004 - San Clemente, CA - ZUMA was buzzing with election coverage from across the nation last night, with
thousands of pictures pouring in from every corner of the U.S., especially the key swing states. Last election's big story (Florida) and this year's nail-biter
(Ohio) received extensive coverage. From sea to shining sea, ZUMA's winning ballot was able to make a clean sweep with strong
images across the board.
Big kudos go out to ZUMA photographers who worked hard this long campaign season. DONALD MURRAY did a killer job on the campaign
trail with candidate JOHN KERRY. His images made ZUMA's Picture of the Day several times over the past few weeks and graced the
pages of media around the world. Great job, Don!
Also, ZUMA's winning team of newspaper partners provided stellar coverage. Thanks go out to the photo departments that worked so
closely with us, including Florida's Palm Beach Post, Ohio's Plain Dealer, Pennsylvania's Philadelphia Daily News, Minnesota's Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Texas' San Antonio Express-News and Austin American-Statesman.
Without further adieu, behold ZUMA's election-night 2004 selects.

Basic Training 101

Photojournalist ROBERT KING spent time following new recruits through basic training at the infamous United States Army Training Center in Fort Knox, Kentucky.
After photographing U.S. troops on the front lines in Iraq, at home as they train and elsewhere around the world, King is convinced these men and women are some
of the most dedicated individuals he has ever met. To view more, click here.
Battle of the Kiddie Bulge

In Glasgow, Scotland, 500 children have joined the United Kingdom's first gym designed for six- to 11-year-olds. The gym's candy-colored user-friendly equipment
boasts fun features, like flashing lights that signal a user's call for assistance. Warm-up sessions include games of hopscotch and tag. With plenty of friendly
instructors on hand, who are specially trained in children's development, the gym is a hit among parents and children alike. Photos by

ZUMA Photographers Honored
Just in - ZUMA photojournalists won first place in two out of thee categories in Asea Brown Broveri's (ABB)
international photography competition. ABB is a Swiss company that launched the competition to illustrate the company's operating principles: responsibility, respect and
determination.
ZUMA's correspondent in Nepal, MUKUNDA BOGATI, won first place in the Respect category. His image, "Mobility," shows a strong
young man transporting his elderly aunt in a basket on his back. "The act shows true consideration and respect for the woman," says Bogati. "When was the last
time you shouldered such a weight?" he asks.
Bogati's first-place honor includes one of the largest cash prizes ever awarded to a Nepalese photojournalist.
ZUMA also represents Imaginechina's YU SHEN, who placed first in the Determination category. Shen's image of a Shanghai scrap
collector hauling his harvest of plastic bottles to a recycling plant on his bicycle is the ultimate demonstration of determination. "Life is tough, but even rubbish
can feed a family," says Shen.
Congratulations to both photographers on this recognition!
ZUMA Shooter in the Spotlight

Digital Imaging caught on quick to the uniqueness of ZUMA photojournalist GEORGE TIEDEMANN's experience shooting the 2004
Olympic Games in Athens. Armed with a 503CW Hasselblad fitted with a Phase One P25 portable digital camera back, the former Sports Illustrated photographer
of 19 years was the only photojournalist at the Games shooting digital in medium format (as far as we know). The results are extraordinarily huge--60+ mega byte files!
files!
Tiedemann's colorful images are full of detail and perfect for advertising or other creative uses, since they can be enlarged to billboard size without sacrificing
quality.

The Mood of America: A Nation Divided
That's what pollsters and pundits say America has become, a country in the midst of a rupture that stands to strain the very fabric of our society.
From rural enclaves to suburban subdivisions to bustling cities--what folks had to say suggests a nation at risk. Many people seem burdened by a sense of deep
political cynicism, a sense their voice or vote doesn't count, that our system of government, including presidential elections, has become hopelessly corrupt.
Others are merely apathetic. Still others are caught up in the kind of extremism that paints opponents in black-and-white hyperbole.
