ZUMA's ROBIN NELSON Helps Bring Vision to New Magazine
November 10, 2004 - San Clemente, CA - Atlanta-based ZUMA photographer ROBIN NELSON has joined Go Fish Productions, Inc. of Woodstock, Georgia, as a founding photographer for Christian Living, a new bimonthly family, lifestyle and business magazine serving the northern Atlanta suburbs. Launched this week, the premier issue showcases Nelson's work, presenting faith as an essential element to a complete life.

"There is a real hunger for stories that share how God works in peoples' lives," says Nelson, a founding ZUMA photographer since the agency's first days over a decade ago. "This isn't a church magazine, nor is it focused on religion. Christian Living takes area residents' personal testimonies and presents them in such a way to connect with anyone, church members or not. These stories show just how real God is," Nelson adds.

Nelson has documented people, life and events in the South for more than 20 years in his work as a photographer for national newspapers and magazines, including TIME, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report, Business Week, the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times. His client base has expanded in recent years to include a variety of local and national ministries, as well.

The magazine's designer, Ryan Noffsinger, created the layout for Christian Living to maximize visual appeal. John Griffin, the magazine's editor and publisher, believes in running strong storytelling pictures prominently.

"[The publisher] knows readers look at pictures first. So, this is a photographer's dream job," says Nelson. Future plans for the magazine include multiple-zoned editions in the metropolitan Atlanta area.

Christian Living's premier issue debuts this week. ZUMA Press will syndicate Nelson's features that appear in the magazine.

Alaska Oil Drilling Back on Agenda, by GARY BRAASCH/ZUMA Press

Now that the election is over and Republican's have political capital to spend, the issue of opening up Alaska's wildlife refuge to drilling is back in play. This week Republicans, in both the House and Senate, said they plan to push legislation for drilling as early as 2005. This would be a huge blow to Democrats and environmental activists, who lobbied hard to protect the refuge in the past.

For breathtaking imagery of Alasaka's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge captured by one of the foremost environmental photojournalists in the world, GARY BRAASCH, visit ZUMApress.com or click here.

The Homeless Church was founded in 1994 as a way to serve and rehabilitate homeless people in their environments. Founded by a homeless couple, the church has expanded from a single dilapidated school bus to include two Healing Homes. It also offers ongoing meal programs, mutual support and a message of inspiration to leave street life, drugs and alcohol.

Robin Nelson

ROBIN NELSON's first Christian Living feature available via ZUMA is Dominican Sisters: Easing the Final Journey. Easing the Final Journey is a heart-warming feature about Lady of Perpetual Help, a free hospice for dying, indigent cancer patients in Atlanta. A small community of Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne and their chaplain care for the patients--many of whom are homeless and poor with nowhere to go. The state-licensed nursing home is one of five in the U.S. operated by New York based Hawthorne Dominican order. To view more, click here.

Keith Dannemiller

Mexico-based ZUMA photojournalist KEITH DANNEMILLER is working on two in-depth stories. The first examines Santa Muerte (Saint Death), a fast-growing cult that worships a feminized version of the grim reaper. The cult originated in Mexico City's lower-class Tepito neighborhood. Despite the efforts of many Catholic priests, veneration of St. Death is growing nationwide.

Dannemiller's second work in progress is Concrete Steps. This feature focuses on outdoor public dances where primarily senior citizens dance to danzon music--a somewhat formal but nonetheless sensuous dance that came to Mexico via Cuba. Expect to more on these stories in the weeks ahead.

The world has turned a deaf ear to the suffering of children from Rwanda to Romania, Belfast to Cairo, India to Haiti--where youth endure victimization and aggression instead of growth and development.
