ZUMA's World Religions

November 22, 2004 - San Clemente, CA - With George W. Bush's sweeping success at tapping the religious vote, moral issues and religion have become hot buttons among ZUMA's editorial clients. Anticipating this trend, ZUMA photojournalists have been submitting an increasing number of religious and socially themed stories from across the globe.

At the forefront of our religious, social and humanitarian reportage is eyevine photojournalist HAZEL THOMPSON. Below is a selection of her most recent work.

God Bless Ravers: Christian Ibiza Clubbers

Ibiza, Spain - Each summer a team of young British missionaries bent on saving drunken souls moves to Ibiza for three months to make a spiritual impact on the island and its people. Their mission and dream is to see the Gospel transform Ibiza. Ibiza is famous for its hedonistic lifestyle, but this group of young holidaymakers choose to spend their summer holidays praying, helping drunken teenagers get back to their hotels safely and talking to people about Christianity.

The Clubbing Preachers blend in with the island's inhabitants by wearing the usual clubbing fashions--short skirts, glitter belts and heels. But these clubbers don't drink, don't do drugs or have sex before marriage. The Clubbing Preachers are trained and sent to Ibiza by an organization called 24-7 prayer.

Cowboys for Jesus

Midland, Texas - The cowboy church movement was pioneered in the 1980s by ranchers and rodeo professionals such as Glen Smith (known as the Cowboy Apostle) and Rev. Ted Presley, president of one of the oldest cowboy ministries, Cowboys for Christ. Cowboys broke away from conventional religion by setting up churches at ranches, arenas and barns. Cowboy church is very different from what most people call church. Cowboys turn up in chaps and hats and don't have to conform to fit in. It's church with country-style music for hymns and worship and parishioners who turn up on their horses and bring dogs to listen to the sermon. Baptism is also completely unique, as well, as it is conducted in a horse trough, instead of a font, with the horses overlooking the event.

Christian Hip-Hop Preachers

Manchester, England - The Tribe (formally the World Wide Message Tribe) was formed in 1992 with the mission to express the Christian message through their hip-hop music to the U.K.'s younger generation. Not only does the band do gigs in clubs, but they also perform at school assemblies, mixing live performance and teachings from the Bible. This is not exactly the glamorous world of excess you would associate with a hip-hop group who have sold well over 500,000 albums, won over 10 Dove Awards and had seven number-one radio singles in the U.S., but that's what makes this band different. The only thing the band carries onstage is the Bible.

John Rowlands

Music and entertainment portrait photographer JOHN ROWLANDS is booked as the official photographer at the Annual Jimi Hendrix Birthday Celebration Show in Seattle. Rowlands, who worked with Hendrix numerous times over the years, is now collaborating with Leon Hendrix (Jimi's younger brother) and Buddy Miles (Jimi's former drummer). According to Rowlands, it's looking like the collaboration will spawn a video documentary and a screenplay for a motion picture down the road. Stay tuned to see more of Rowlands' work from this project in the weeks ahead. To view more from Rowlands, click here.

Roxy Team Rider SOFIA MULANOVICH (21) was named the World Championship Tour (WCT) World Champion for 2004 after placing second at the Roxy Pro competition in Ali'i Beach Park on Oahu's North Shore. Though one competition remains this year, it is now mathematically impossible for another athlete to surpass her. Mulanovich will finish 2004 as the top female surfer in the world and become the first South American of either gender to capture a world surfing championship.
