World War on AIDS

December 1, 2004 - San Clemente, CA - To commemorate World AIDS Day, ZUMA Press is recognizing the many photojournalists worldwide who apply their talent toward raising awareness about the brave organizations and individuals who help fight the war on AIDS. As a tribute to their stellar work, we are proud to showcase selections from their stories on HIV/AIDS from around the world.

Monks Battle Taboos

Wat Prabat Nampu, Thailand - In countries such as Thailand, attempts to educate the population about HIV/AIDS and safe sex were stifled by cultural taboos about sex. But faced with the obvious need to talk more openly about the disease and to treat AIDS sufferers, monks have taken a lead in the country's fight against the spread of HIV and AIDS. In many instances, temple monks take it upon themselves to educate rural populations on preventing the disease. In Wat Prabat Nampu (pictured here), monks have converted their homes into hospices for the dying. Photos by LES STONE/ZUMA Press.

Terminal Hope

One Man Army

Zhumadian, Henan, China - GAO YAO JIE is a prominent retired gynecologist who has become one of China's foremost grassroots AIDS activists. Dr. Gao helps poor farmers in Henan Province who became infected with HIV in the 1990s when they sold their blood. The now outlawed blood-collection stations used unsanitary practices that spread blood-borne diseases. In some villages, over 50 percent of the population is infected with HIV. Dr. Gao is the only one to provide information about the disease to villagers. Photos by JIA JUN SHEN/Imaginechina/ZUMA Press.

Prison Hell

Huntsville, Alabama, USA - Alabama's prison system is widely recognized for its systemic problems and deplorable conditions. Ranked 50th in the nation in terms of medical spending per prisoner, life is even worse for Alabama inmates diagnosed with HIV or AIDS. At the Limestone Correctional Facility, inmates with HIV/AIDS live out their lives quarantined from other inmates and prison activities. Prisoners with HIV/AIDS line up three to four times a day to receive their medications. The first "pill call" occurs at 3 a.m. If one is too sick to get up and stand in line, he misses his meds. zReportage Update

Cambodia's New Killing Fields

To see people dying in AIDS hospices, on the streets and in their modest homes is to wonder if a country that endured so much suffering under the Khmer Rouge can bear any more grief. Clearly, Cambodia's agony did not end with the death of Pol Pot and the collapse of his regime. A new, more deadly scourge threatens to tear apart Cambodia's economic and social fabric. Cambodia's government and economy, weakened by decades of civil war, is ill equipped to combat this new, virulent enemy from within.
