Seismic Wave Roundup |
January 5, 2005 - San Clemente, CA - When disaster struck South Asia last week ZUMA photojournalists and content partners responded at light speed to capture the devastating impact of the tsunami. Among the dozens contributors submitting pictures from the region, several deserve special mention for their courage and outstanding response: STEVE SANDFORD in Phuket, Thailand; TC MALHOTRA in Tamil Nadu, India; GEORGE HILGEMANN in Sri Lanka, Jiwa Foto and Action Press in Banda Aceh, Indonesia; and our newest partner, MAXPPP, who sent in feeds from the Maldives, Malaysia, Thailand and France. Given the scope of the disaster, ZUMA reached out to syndicate the picture coverage two leading Australian dailies: The Age and Sydney Morning Herald. ZUMA's stellar all around coverage ran all over the world. Top media including TIME Magazine (01-10-2005, page 5), Newsweek (01-10-2005, p28), US News & World Report (01-10-2005, pages 12-13), and the New York Post (12-30-2004, page 3) turned to ZUMA for the iconic, story telling image by JOHN RUSSELL/The Age that showed people running for their lives as the tsunami hit the shore of Phuket. Our broad coverage of the tsunami's aftermath will continue in the weeks and months ahead. At press time, three ZUMA photographers--JEFFREY AUSTIN, KARL GROBL, FRANK HUSTER--joined STEVE SANDFORD in Asia to document international relief efforts across the region.
