Reportage Rules in 2005

ZREP Tearsheets

December 16, 2005 - DANA POINT, Calif. - ZUMA Press Inc., the largest independent picture agency and wire service, is proud to announce the sweeping success of zReportage.com--ZUMA's elite photojournalism division.

ZUMA's director, Scott Mc Kiernan, founded zReportage and remains actively involved in its production. "I've always held concerned photojournalism close to my heart and will continue to champion it," he said.

"I am delighted to see zReportage stories published all over the world. The positive feedback I receive each week is almost overwhelming. I believe we're onto something great here. And it can only get better," added Mc Kiernan.

Since its launch in February 2004, zReportage has spearheaded the revival and interest in reportage photography. With compelling essays on timely subjects such methamphetamine production and abuse (see America's Dirty Drug by Mark Allen Johnson, Robert King and Robin Nelson/ZUMA); unknown communities of Jews, Christians and Muslims living in peace (see Uganda's Hidden Jews by Richard Sobol/ZUMA); the rise of cancer rates among Iraqi children (see Iraq's Cancer Crisis by Nikos Pilos/ZUMA); and global warming (see Global Warming Beacon by Gary Braasch/ZUMA), media clients worldwide have embraced these powerful stories.

Once a week, on "Reportage Tuesdays," thousands of editors receive an e-mail synopsis of the latest featured story.

"I look forward to reading the weekly updates from zReportage," said AOL's Cathaleen Curtiss. "As the Director of Photography for a very large staff of photo editors I am often doing work as a manager and spending less time looking at great photos. [zReportage] is my weekly reprieve, a chance to be inspired, motivated and celebrate the great work being done by great photographers around the world. It reminds me of all the reasons I chose photography as a profession in particular photojournalism. To inform, educate and make a difference," Curtiss added.

zReportage stories have found homes in a wide variety of media outlets ranging from leading dailies to lifestyle magazines.

When Stern launched its photojournalism title, View, earlier this year, they chose to syndicate the multi-award-winning zReportage essay Against All Odds by Jim Gehrz/Minneapolis Star Tribune/ZUMA. Against All Odds headlined View's premiere issue and ran across an unprecedented 14 pages!

Against All Odds

"All of us love zReportage," said Sue Lapsien, Stern's U.S. Bureau Chief. "We love the presentation with the thumbs, the slideshow and text. We forward links to our headquarters in Germany all the time to show the wonderful pictures and the diversity of reportage," she said.

Other titles to showcase zReportage work include American Photo, AOL Visions, Newsweek (U.S. and international editions), LIFE, Photo District News, Vibe, Fronteras de la Noticia and Caramba in the U.S.; Geo Lino, Focus and Max Verlag in Germany; Bizarre, Daily Mirror, Front Magazine, Irish Independent, Marie Claire, Scotland on Sunday and The Times in the U.K.; Emirates Woman and Open Skies (United Arab Emirates); Watch and Panorama (Holland); The Earth (Taiwan); and Playboy, Life & Style, Quo, Televisa and La Prensa in Latin America.

Whether reproduced online or in print, zReportage is always a hit.

"Some of my favorite galleries created by the AOL staff photo editors this year came from the great work of [zReportage] photographers, [such as] the warm and delightful portraits by Chris Curry for Senior Workforce, the moving and thought provoking photos compiled by Robert King from Faces of Katrina gallery, the poignant images for Aceh's Orphans showing life returning to the area destroyed by the tsunami and of course Robert King's wonderful real environmental portraits of women in the military completing their duties that rounded our package on Women at War," said Curtiss.

zReportage Update

ZUMA Press - zReportage Update

Shafted Woodsmen - by HECTOR AMEZCUA/Sacramento Bee/ZUMA Press

Foreign guest laborers take jobs most Americans don't want. But the 15,000+ men and women who travel here to work in the woods are hardly offered our hospitality. On public and private land, these "pineros" (forest workers) suffer injury, abuse, even death. They are victims of employer exploitation, government neglect and a contracting system that insulates landowners - including the U.S. government - from responsibility.

A Sacramento Bee nine-month special investigative report.
