Cover Man Gilhooley – Rocks OC Weekly
March 15, 2007 - Dana Point, CA - "Somewhere along the way I learned it's more important to make the pictures more about the subject and less about me," explains Orange County portrait photographer extraordinaire John Gilhooley. Strong well lit and thought out environmental portraits have made him the photographer of choice at OC Weekly, where he scored his 16 OC Weekly cover. The California native combines the elements of his surroundings and transforms them into a studio. Be it an alley lined with electrical wiring, or a rooftop with a single yellow chair, Gilhooley finds the right spot to create his magic. With a focus on music, but a skill for great portraiture to illustrate all kinds of stories, Gilhooley enjoys the challenges of making a strong picture in limited time and surrounding.
"Very proud to rep John. Gilhooley works hard and produces one of a kind portraits, especially when shooting his number one love: Musicians." stated an excited, Scott Mc Kiernan Director of Gilhooley's agency ZUMA Press.
Also check out his one-man-show of 20 plus prints at Memphis at the Santora in Santa Ana starting April 7, 2007.
BACKSTORY: Gilhooley's Shoot Notes:
John likes to keep notes on some of his shoots, here he shares one:
Matt Costa / OC Weekly Cover 7/28/06
- What a great day I had meeting Matt Costa
- We met at his house in downtown Huntington Beach and as I had thought… it was a perfect place to shoot
- We shot a simple portrait of Matt with his guitar in front of a blue wall inside
- One thing I can never resist doing is picking up the musicians instruments and strumming tunes with them
- I played a few chords from an old Danzig song and Matt says "Oh Danzig, I know that one' and he hummed a few of the vocal lines
- He then strummed an old Fleetwood Mac tune and so it went
- I asked him if people were treating him differently since his music has taken off, but he said "everyone has been so cool to him"… I joked that "people were treating me differently since my photo career has blown up"… and so it went
- Heading outside to shoot the cover shot in the alley I asked him to change his shirt
- Matt comes out and says "how'd you like this one? You just can't go wrong with a big tiger on your shirt"
