Black And White Is Alive And Well
April 26, 2007 - Santa Monica, CA - David Healey a former Magnum shooter and now a ZUMA Press photographer, is a B&W evangelist. Whether working at his day job as a master black and white printer to some of photography's stars or planning his next personal project, his life is B&W 24/7.
Healey is the personal printer for many world famous photographers, including William Claxton, Arthur Grace, Walter Ioos, and David Hume Kennerly among other luminaries. When he is not making exquisite B&W prints, Healey can be found shooting or editing his life long project - documenting the trails and tribulations of his 21 year-old twin daughters. Healey is also known to be a "gritty" street photographer, shooting exclusively on B&W film. "I enjoy printing for other people, you get know an image they are famous for, then it is fun to see their proof sheets, looking at the images before and after that picture gives you a look at how they think or the events that surround that image" mused Healey. "Some people think that my printing is something obsolete, but it doesn't matter to me-it's the impact of the image that counts. I've never liked shooting celebrities either but I love photos of people forgotten in time". Healey's street photography has been shown in Borders bookstores and most recently his work was part of a group show at Farmani Gallery. Most recently his focus has shifted to his wife Pam, who is suffering from leukemia, his new work is centered around her battle.
"David is one of the photography's true gentleman and quiet heroes. I love his work and his approach. B&W is alive and well with Mr. Healey leading the charge!" Scott Mc Kiernan, ZUMA Director and fellow B&W evangelist and lover of the medium.
