From Gotham to Gaza
After graduating from Skidmore College in 1994, ZUMA Press shooter Bryan Smith moved to New York City aka Gotham City. There he began a stint printing in various darkrooms, while at the same time, documenting the demise of the industrial buildings in New York and New Jersey using a 4x5 camera.
"In 2003 I decided to pursue photojournalism and began putting a portfolio together... I called the 1-800 number in the front of the NY Daily News and got in touch with the photo editor of the NY Daily News, Mike Lipack. Mike gave me a contract and from that day forward I have been steadily working as a freelancer," remembers Bryan Smith in a recent e-mail.
"I have covered everything from local politics and features to national and international spot news. I was sent to cover Hurricane Katrina which was and remains the most intense work I have done."
"Among the memorable and heart-wrenching events was, photographing a man trying to commit suicide on the Brooklyn Bridge. After firing shots in the air with a 9mm gun, the police moved in and did not shoot him due to the number of bystanders, he sat and folded his legs and put the gun to his chest and I photographed him before, during and after killing himself. Those images are burned into my mind."
"...as far as working for ZUMA,it's a no brainer! I file everything, no matter how insignificant it may seem cause those pics usually end up being the ones someone somewhere needs, being that I work in NYC local politics is national here, with a mayor we have that is gonna shake up the presidential campaign I've been photographing him with that in mind. ZUMA is the best at selling my images, they sold some pics of Kobayashi massaging his jaw, which I believe is the only pic like that, it was made at a hotel following last years win, and now he lost."
ZUMA is pleased to have recently signed the award winning Smith as a contract photographer. "Bryan is the real deal, hard working and a pure journalist. I can really relate to him, as I too started in NYC in a very similar fashion, printing for Eugene Smith and The Daily News gave me tremendous experience and foundation for the rest of my career. Hustling and keeping my nose to the ground for all the news I could get. It is an honor to have Mr. Smith in the ZUMA family!" Scott Mc Kiernan ZUMA founder.
