ZUMA GOES FOR THE GOLD
Aug. 08, 2008 - Beijing, China - In 776 BC the first recorded Olympic games were held. At the time only one event, a one-stade (approximately 630-foot or 192-meter) run, was won by a cook named Coroebus. As history would soon prove the Greeks not only continued the games but began to use the games as a political and militaristic rest for the neighboring city states, going so far as to call a truce during times of unrest so that all could participate. Not only did athletes travel to participate but also politicians accompanied their teams in order to have peaceful talks between warring cities. Famously antagonistic city states such as Sparta would even wait to send warriors into battle until the last game had been completed.
Fast forward to 2008, and the world is a seriously different place, however the original spirit and quality of the games is still intact. As we gather our own Olympic warriors, ZUMA Press can't help but look back on the amazing history of this worldwide tradition. Although this years games are not without their own set of political issues, such as the current turmoil that has happened due to China's relationship with Tibet, we at ZUMA are happily joining the media of the world in covering this event that brings us all a little closer. ZUMA's Coverage promises to be the best yet with a stellar roster of ZUMA Photographers and an unprecedented number of renown newspapers:
