Scott Mc Kiernan Acquires Keystone Press Agency

A Priceless Archive - Over a Century of History Captured on Film
San Clemente, CA - September 26, 2003 - Scott Mc Kiernan, director and founder of ZUMA Press, is proud to announce the acquisition and rebirth KEYSTONE PRESS AGENCY, Inc., now a sister company of ZUMA.
Mc Kiernan has relocated Keystone Press Agency's operations from 42nd Street in New York, where it was based for the last quarter century, to San Clemente, California. Operating under the name KEYSTONE PICTURES (www.KeystonePictures.com), Mc Kiernan vows to re-invigorate the once dominant agency and bring it into 21st century with technology and hard work.
"The archive of over 1.2 million images will be quickly organized, digitized and made available via a new state of the art Website and downloadable database similar in nature to what has made its sister agency, ZUMA Press, an industry leader," says Mc Kiernan.
The Keystone archive is an extraordinary picture show depicting every geopolitical event, trend and personality that shaped the last century. It includes everything from the poster boy for dictators, Idi Amin, to the Beatles' first tour of America. "If it happened, Keystone has pictures of it," exclaims Mc Kiernan.
Founded in the early 1900s, Keystone grew to be the largest picture agency in the world in the 1940s and 50s, with offices in over 20 countries at its peak. Today, active Keystone offices remain in Brazil, Germany, Japan, France, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, the Czech Republic, Argentina, Canada and now the USA.
Mc Kiernan says that though ZUMA Press and Keystone Pictures will operate as separate companies, both will be under his direction. Furthermore, Keystone Pictures will continue to honor its many existing relationships worldwide and will work with ZUMA Press as its exclusive agent in the United States.
"I estimate the acquisition and full rebirth of the once dominant New York agency, including restoring it to its former glory, will be a seven-figure project. But you can't place a value on history," said Mc Kiernan.
Upon hearing of the acquisition, Agnes Garai, director of Keystone Brazil--and the niece and last descendant of Bert Garai (the founder of Keystone) to be managing a Keystone agency--said, "Scott's initiative sounds excellent. It is most gratifying to witness the rebirth of our historical archives. We wish him the greatest success!"
Another leading industry editor exclaimed: "It's great that Scott is keeping the collection alive and available."
Prior to this acquisition, the newest member to the Keystone group was Keystone Canada, founded in 1960 by Bob Moynier. His son Eric has since taken up the reins and said: "We are proud to welcome Scott into the Keystone family!"
Long term, Mc Kiernan plans to rekindle the energy that was once Keystone Picture Agency in New York. Keystone Pictures looks forward to filling research requests and getting as much of the historical images online and ready for licensing to the editorial, design and advertising community.
