The Quest for Talent Takes ZUMA to the Top of Jackson Hole, Wyoming

October 22, 2003 ‚ When ZUMA Press evaluates new talent, it's not always the Pulitzer Prize-winning images or lists of exhibitions that impress us. Quite often, it's the enthusiasm and passion for what the photographer is shooting that catches our interest.

"Passion is rarely filtered out by a camera lens," says Scott Mc Kiernan, director of ZUMA Press. "It's what drives photographers to get closer to their subject and find ways to make the shoot work."

This is precisely the quality that photographer DAVID STUBBS exemplifies. Stubbs is a backcountry snowboarder, mountain biker, climber and all-around nature buff who immerses himself completely in his environment.

"David's work represents a new generation of nature photographers. His images are fresh, vibrant and bursting with action and color. They truly capture his appetite for adrenaline," says Mc Kiernan. "I can see his career going a long way and look forward to being a part of that success," he adds.

The young photographer has a busy season ahead, dividing his time between the slopes of the Northern Rockies and the Alps.

Watch out for his upcoming features on Backcountry Skiing in Jackson Hole, WY and Roger's Pass in the Canadian Rockies. Other features include: Skiing the Classic Haute Route in the Alps from Chamonix to Zermatt, The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem - The Duality of Conservation and Consumption and The Thriving Cowboy Culture in Wyoming.

Not one to slow down, Stubbs also plans to open the doors to his fine-art gallery, Vivid Eye, in November. Vivid Eye is located in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and showcases his photography along with the watercolors of Sue Cedarholm.

Stubbs is a former staff photographer and contributing writer at the Jackson Hole Guide. His work has appeared in numerous publications including Outside, Forbes, USA Today and a number of other dailies across the country.

A Day the World Wanted Peace

Image Connie Koch, founding partner of the design firm Hello [NYC], had a concept for a book that would capture the global voice of protest in the weeks leading up to the U.S. and British-led invasion of Iraq. The result of her idea, and the hard work of her editors and global contributors, is a book co-published by Hello [NYC] and AK Press titled 2/15: The Day the World Said No to War, which compiles photographs and written reflections from 38 countries and includes a forward by Arun Gandhi.

Mareile Fritzsche, photo editor of 2/15 said, "ZUMA's contribution to 2/15 - The Day the World Said No to War was invaluable. ZUMA's editors immediately understood the importance of this book and joined forces with us to make 2/15 happen. With photographers all around the world--as far away as Korea and Israel--they provided us with the highest quality images instantly."

ZUMA Press is proud that our photos were selected for this book. Some of the images included were from Branimir Kvartuc in Hollywood; Lonny Shavelson in San Francisco, California; Isaac Menashe in Washington, D.C; Hak Ri-Kim/Keystone in Seoul, Korea; Ilya Pilatev/Kommersant in Russia; Kevin Unger in Tel Aviv, Israel; and Rolf Gibbs in Berlin, Germany.

2/15: The Day the World Said No to War has already received positive reviews by Photo District News and Wired magazine. It is scheduled for release the first week of November but is available by pre-order at www.amazon.com.
