Democracy Comes to BaghdadJanuary 27, 2005 - Baghdad, IRAQ - On January 30th, Iraq holds its first free election in more than 50 years. Despite the escalating violence and incidents of terror across the country, ZUMA photographers is hunkering down and preparing to cover the historic event from all angles. ROBERT KING is embedded with U.S. troops and will continue submit daily updates from the capital on the coalition forces and the Iraqi Civil Defense Corps as they work to secure polling stations. NIKOS PILOS is living locally in Baghdad and will cover polling stations and full voting activities. He just submitted reportage on the re-emergence of the Iraqi Communist Party (ICP), which is experiencing a revival after decades of persecution. (See pictures below.) JANICE YIM is in Kurdistan in Northern Iraq developing a story on Massoud Barzani, leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party. She will remain in the North through the election. Wade decision. Click image above to view more. Hermits Revealed LUC NOVOVITCH just submitted his exploration America's growing hermit subculture. Almost a dozen individuals are featured including an atheist living with his goats and dogs in the Chihuahua Desert; a Catholic monk who never leaves his house/hermitage in Temple, TX; and two Franciscan sisters living in the woods in the middle of nowhere West Virginia. Some of these individuals he are drawn to solitude and escaping the perceived nuisances of so-called modern life, others seek silence and isolation to further their dedication to a contemplative spiritual or religious life. In another feature, Novovitch photographed a group of Waffen-SS and Wehrmacht reenactors as they attempted to take over Fort Washita, Oklahoma from the GIs who were defending it.
