GRAPHIS Goes ZUMA![]() February 3, 2005 - San Clemente, CA - The much-anticipated GRAPHIS PhotoAnnual 2005 is out and ZUMA is honored to have four images represented in this prestigious juried publication. ZUMA images were selected among thousands of entries and appear along side many other world-renown photographers including Annie Leibovitz and Antonin Kratochvil (VII). In the Photojournalism category, GRAPHIS selected ROBERT KING/ZUMA's coverage of the attacks on Holy city of Karbala that killed more than 60 people and wounded hundreds more. This image of a woman checking her husband for a heart beat has run dozens of times around the globe and has since become an iconic representation of Iraq's ongoing sectarian violence. LES STONE/ZUMA's winning submission was photographed in Liberia after the fighting ended and the world's attention has shifted elsewhere. Children as young as eight or nine years old carry AK-47's and look around for action. This same image was also honored in Applied Arts' 2004 Photography & Illustration Annual. In the Sports Photography category, GRAPHIS selected a stunning underwater shot of two surfers riding a wave. The image was photographed by RON BRAZIL, ZUMA's long-time surf lifestyle, portrait and fashion shooter. Last but not least, COR VOS's aerial shot of cyclists competing in the Tour of Qatar also received top honors by GRAPHIS for Sports photography. This image also won Sports Shooter's Sports Action: Award of Excellence. Please join us in congratulating these photographers on their achievements. Kudos also to ZUMA's director and founder, Scott Mc Kiernan, and ZUMA's Photographer Liaison, Marianna Day Massey, for spending countless hours screening images and committing resources to entering international photo contests such as GRAPHIS. Industry awards are an important part of identifying, supporting and inspiring great talent. zPeople![]() As part of our continued efforts to keep ZUMApress.com a state of the art website and database ZUMA has appointed PAT JOHNSON as the new Database Administrator (DBA). The images selected for the show were carefully excerpted from the work of award-winning ZUMA photographer, LES STONE. Adding to the ambiance was Day of the Dead ceremonial music that Stone recorded on one of his recent trips to Haiti. Stone traveled to Haiti more than 30 times over 10 years on assignment for major international news magazines--usually to cover the ongoing cycles of political violence that plagued the nation. From the outset he developed an affinity to documenting Voodoo worship. "Visually, the Voodoo ceremony is incredibly exciting to witness and photograph. It's very positive and beautiful," says Stone. Voodoo is deeply rooted in the Caribbean island of Haiti. Although it has been practiced for hundreds of years and was recognized by Haitian officials as an official religion in 2003, it is still widely misunderstood around the world. Vivid VOODOO will show at Ocean Brewery's BIG Gallery through March 21, 2005. The collection is also scheduled to exhibit at the St. Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art in Glasgow, Scotland from May to October 2006. Other shows are pending around the globe. We just learned that the CD of music that was a spin off from Sobol's book, Abayudaya: The Jews of Uganda (Abbeville Press), was just nominated for a Grammy award! This same collection of African rhythms and harmonies blended with Jewish celebration and traditional Hebrew prayer, accompanied the pictures and text of Sobol's Abayudaya story in AOL's Visions in 2004.
