Invisible WorkforceMarch 2, 2005 - San Clemente, CA - The definitive migrant worker reportage has found a home at ZUMA. Produced by our newest recruit, photojournalist. RICK NAHMIAS, "The Migrant Project: Contemporary California Farm Workers" was shot over six months in 40+ towns spanning the state from Calexico to Sacramento. The powerful combination of photographs with text give insight into the lives and struggles of California's "invisible workforce"--a segment that keeps the state's $27 billion agriculture industry afloat. Rick's reportage is garnering huge interest nation wide. Packaged as a traveling photography and bi-lingual text exhibition, The Migrant Project has shown in 10 locales (museums, universities, cultural centers, or conferences) around the country and has nearly a dozen more scheduled in the next 36 months. The project, co-sponsored by California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc., The Center for Latino Policy Research and The Kurz Family Foundation, received a U.S. Congressional Citation form Rep. Loretta Sanchez. Just this week, Rick learned that the Smithsonian is acquiring between 4-6 of his prints for the Photographic History Collection of the National Museum of American History. Since its premiere, through benefits and print sales, The Migrant Project helped raise thousands of dollars for numerous farm worker related non-profit and charitable organizations. A book project is in the works, as is the creation of a middle and high school curriculum through a partnership with the national education non-profit, Facing History & Ourselves. Two public forums covering housing, health and education issues relating to migrant farm workers are being held in conjunction with his upcoming engagements in Santa Barbara and Santa Maria, California (stay tuned for more on this later). "Aspiring photojournalists seem to think that big stories can only be found overseas," said Scott Mc Kiernan, director and founder of ZUMA Press. "But Rick's work is a perfect example of important stories that need to be told can be uncovered in our own backyard." All images from The Migrant Project are proudly represented by ZUMA Press.
