Cheryl Hatch Helps Bring Free Press to Iraq

March 9, 2005 - San Clemente, CA - ZUMA's newest documentary photographer, CHERYL HATCH, is about to make a difference in the development of Iraq's free press. This month, Cheryl joins the Institute for War and Peace Reporting in Northern Iraq where she will train and mentor a new generation of journalists to report objectively on and about developments within their country.

"This assignment means a lot to me," says Cheryl. "I am returning to a country where I worked as a journalist as and photographer, so it's now my turn to give something back to Iraqis. Secondly, it will give me an opportunity to set aside some funds for my own long-term reportage on military families that I hope to pick-up when I return to the U.S.," she said.

Best known for her work in Iraq, Somalia, Liberia, Mozambique and Egypt, Cheryl gives unique perspective to her coverage of war by looking at its impact on women and children. In 1999, Cheryl received the prestigious Pew Fellowship for journalists from Johns Hopkins University--she was the first photographer ever awarded the honor. The Fellowship supported her reportage in Eritrea called A Luta Continua--the story of the women who fought as soldiers to liberate their country then went on to fight for their own freedom.

Her photographs and writing have been published in TIME, Newsweek, Paris Match, Stern, New York Times and Christian Science Monitor, to name a few. And in books Cheryl's images are found in Game Face: What Does a Woman Athlete Look Like? and Texas 24/7. She has exhibited around the world, including in the Smithsonian and the American University in Cairo.

Cheryl was a judge at the NPPA's Best of Photojournalism contest and worked as a staff photographer for the Associated Press in Seattle before joining ZUMA Press. The French, English, Spanish and Arabic speaker is now represented worldwide exclusively by ZUMA Press, and is available for assignments. Who's Shooting What

Good Morning Iraq!
ZUMA's NIKOS PILOS just finished a feature on the popular Freedom Radio Afn-Iraq radio station. Run by U.S. Forces, the station broadcasts a mix of news, information and music programming for 16 hours a day from it's small two-room station. Pilos has been in Iraq since late December 2004 producing a long list of feature stories. He will remain in Iraq through April 2005.

Crystal Methane Bust
ZUMA's ROBERT KING returned from Baghdad last week and jumped into an investigative story on the popularity of crystal methamphetamine. The commonly used drug is popular among club and rave scenes for the high-energy rush it produces. King begins his reportage by working with under cover agents who are cracking down on meth labs in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Smokin Sadhus
ZUMA's Nepalese photojournalist MUKUNDA BOGATI attended a gathering of Sadhus at the holy site of Lord Shiva Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu. The ascetic holy men traveled from all over India to attend the celebration, and spent much of the time smoking marijuana and hashish--a common practice among Sadhus.

zReportage Update

Invisible Workforce

Traveling in darkness and working in California's blinding sun, a quiet army of migrant farm workers picks over half of the nation's daily consumption of produce. Employed in jobs American's shun, this underclass plays a vital role in keeping California's $27 billion agriculture industry afloat. Despite their importance, farm workers consistently rank among the most impoverished and poorly housed members of our society.
