What Would You Do For Global Warming?

April 13, 2005 - San Clemente, CA
- ZUMA Press photojournalist Les Stone has embarked on an assignment as epic as the challenge he's photographing. Stone is documenting polar explorers Lonnie Dupre and Eric Larsen as they battle extreme fog, hypothermic temperatures and unstable ice conditions with hopes of becoming the first to make a summer crossing of the Arctic Ocean.

The duo will pull and paddle specially modified canoes over 1,240 miles of shifting sea ice and Open Ocean. The 100-day unsupported journey across the geographic North Pole to Ellesmere Island, Canada begins on May 12.

The mission, called One World Expedition, hopes to raise awareness of the growing threat of global warming, which is felt around the world, but particularly in the earth's delicate polar regions. With 10% less ice covering the Arctic Ocean than there was 40 years ago, the expedition will have their work cut out for them.

As a warm-up, Stone covered the two-man team training in Churchill, Canada. He will also be shooting the history-making team as they set out from Siberia, as they cross the North Pole and as they reach the end of their epic journey in Canada.

Library at the Top of the World - Sobol Productions/ZUMA Press
Foreigners visit Nepal expecting a land of magic and mountains. But the mountain kingdom is in fact in the midst of a standoff between Maoists rebels and the king. It's short on resources, infrastructure and almost entirely dependent on foreign aid and tourism.

Until two years ago, many Nepali districts had no public libraries where children could riffle through a shelf of books or look up something in an encyclopedia.

With illiteracy rates at 50%, a Nevada based education specialist, Antonia Neubauer Ph.D., decided to step in and create an independent, non-profit organization to help mountain communities build and sustain libraries. This feature follows the progress of stocking and opening the first Library at the Top of the World. Photos by Sobol Productions/ZUMA Press, text by Louisa Kasdon/ZUMA Press.

Expulsion from Paradise - Eyal Ofer/
ZUMA Press
Built in the 1980s, Palm Beach Hotel is a relic of times past. Located in Gaza's Gush Katif settlement, the once glorious hot spot nestled just two miles from a sandy beach was a popular tourist destination until the Intifada began in 2000. Today, the few rooms still connected to electricity and water serves as a squatter's paradise for surfers. This feature is part of an ongoing series on Gaza's settlers that Ofer is working on in run-up to the pending disengagement process. You can find more pictures from this essay on ZUMApress.com.

Ofer is hoping to hook-up with reporters who are interested in taping his intimate knowledge of the area and contacts with the people (both Israeli and Palestinians) to create stories on this subject. For more information, contact Ruaridh Stewart at 949.494.7707.

zReportage Update

Guns of Khyber Pass - ©Georgie Scott/eyevine/ZUMA Press

More than a century ago, the British passed on the art of gun making to the locals of Pakistan's North West Frontier Province. It was a small price to pay for securing safe passage through the Khyber Pass. At the time, no one realized the impact weapons manufacturing would have on the local economy or culture.

With no arable land to farm, the town of Darra Adam Khel embraced the new skill as a means for survival. Today, Darra's economy depends on the trade and manufacture of replica firearms.
