Pulitzer, BOP and POY...Oh My!April 28, 2005 - San Clemente, CA - The results are in from the NPPA's Best of Photojournalism contest, the Picture of the Year International Competition, and numerous other prestigious industry recognitions. ZUMA is proud to represent dozens of winners, many some of which are showcased here.
Manny
Crisostomo of ZUMA-represented
Sacramento Bee won the 37th Annual Robert F. Kennedy
Journalism Award for International Photography for his essay The
Leftover People. The essay captures the hopes and emotions of Hmong
refugees as they journey from camps in Northern Bangkok to start new lives
in Sacramento and Minnesota. The Leftover People was published
in a 20-page special report and was showcased by zReportage.com--ZUMA's
elite photojournalism division--in October 2004.According to the RFK, the series prompted an outpouring of offers for assistance and donations of clothing and food for the newcomers, causing one judge to remark that, "the photographer did an enormous public service in introducing a group of immigrants to their new neighbors in the United States." Among the many POYi-winners that ZUMA represents is The Palm Beach Post. The Post cleaned up with its stellar hurricane coverage, exceptional editing and more, taking home at least nine top honors. The Post also became a 2005 Pulitzer Prize finalist in the Breaking News Photography category for its imaginative and panoramic coverage of hurricanes that struck Florida. Other POYi-winning coverage available for syndication via ZUMA Press is Bryan Patrick/Sacramento Bee's series, Missing Soldiers, and Light Amid Loss by Bob Owen/San Antonio Express-News. Two zReportage.com essays won awards in the NPPA Best of Photojournalism 2005 competition: The Sacramento Bee's Renée C. Byer received First Place for her Nature and Environment Picture Story Seeds of Doubt; and Lisa Krantz of the San Antonio Express-News won Third Place BOP honors for her Feature Picture Story, Mood of America: A Nation Divided. ZUMA's
Bryan
Smith won Honorable Mention in the Campaign 2004 category of the NPPA's
BOP for his picture of 1000 coffins being marched up 7th Avenue past Madison
Square Garden as a protest against the Republican National Convention.
The image was shot while Smith was on assignment for the New
York Daily News--a paper he regularly freelances for.The zReportage essay, Saddam's Holocaust by Richard Sennott/Minneapolis Star Tribune received First Place Feature/Multiple in April's NPPA Regional Monthly Newsphoto Clip Contest. ZUMA has a strong presence in the 14th Applied Arts Photography & Illustration Annual. Three images from ZUMA's Mark Richards (Route 66 series), Les Stone (Haiti), Eros Hoagland (Haiti) and Jason South/The Age (Tsunami coverage) made this year's annual, as did the now iconic image of a hurricane-flooded grapefruit grove by Richard Graulich/Palm Beach Post. ![]() Last
but not least, we are honored that two ZUMA
images will appear in the American Photography Annual 2005: Tami
Silicio's picture of flag-draped coffins being loaded onto a plane
out of Kuwait, and tsunami coverage by Jason
South/The Age.American Photo selected 310 of 6,500 images entered for the Annual that will be distributed worldwide in November 2005. Once again, these are just a few of the many accolades ZUMA content received this year. We regret not having the space to acknowledge all of the honors bestowed upon our contributors.
