Thailand's Muslims Battle for Independence - by Steve Sandford/ZUMA Press

Everyone Loves Hybrids

Thailand's escalating armed violence by Muslim separatists in the three southernmost provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat has left more than 800 dead in conflicts, revenge killings, bombings and beheadings over the last 16 months. While Muslims represent a small minority (3.8%) of Thailand's population, Muslims make up the majority in these three provinces.

Catholic Church Losing Ground - by Jack Kurtz/ZUMA Press

A Mother's Day Dream

The Catholic Church in San Cristobal is under assault on several fronts. Evangelical Protestants are gaining strength every day as Mexican Catholics, especially the impoverished and oppressed Indian peoples, like the Mayans around San Cristobal, are drawn to Pentecostalism's lively worship services and its promises of instant spiritual and material gratification. Find out how Pentecostalism's "health and wealth" theology is gaining ground in Latin America. For complete text, contact Ruaridh Stewart at 949.481.3747.

Indonesia's Kids Behind Bars - by Josh Estey/UNICEF/JiwaFoto/ZUMA Press

Indonesia's Kids Behind Bars

While on assignment for UNICEF, photojournalist Josh Estey discovered the grim reality young Indonesian felons face. Passing their long days together, new juvenile offenders at Kabon Waru Detention Centre are locked down for two days in dark, damp and often dangerous cells before being allowed outside. Deny, a fourteen-year-old boy being held on sexual assault charges, explained to UNICEF how he survives. "Most of the older [inmates] treat us well. They give us advice, tell us to be hard, tough, not to show we're frightened because then the guards and the other prisoners will take advantage of us."

zReportage Update

Birthing Crisis - © CHERYL HATCH/ZUMA Press

According to The World Health Organization, "it has never been scientifically proven that the hospital is a safer place than home for a woman who has had an uncomplicated pregnancy to have her baby." Yet in the U.S. almost all (98%) of babies are born in a hospital. Further, while nurse-midwives are legal in the U.S., only 14 states allow them to perform home births.

Home births are widely championed as a safe choice for low risk pregnancies. It's described as a sacred experience that emphasizes a woman's intuition, spirituality and inner power.
