Gaza in Flux

Disengagement Standoffs

May 18, 2005 - San Clemente, CA - Israelis are divided over the upcoming plans to withdraw from Gaza that is now scheduled for mid-August.

Thousands of young extremists took the streets on Monday to voice their disapproval of the disengagement process. ZUMA Press photojournalist Kevin Unger was on the scene as tires were set ablaze, traffic was stopped and ultimately hundreds of people were arrested for the disruption.

ZUMA's photojournalist and correspondent in Gaza, Eyal Ofer, says that despite the protests and weeks of delay in dismantling the settlements, logistical preparations by the army and police seem to be picking up pace. Meanwhile, extreme right wing settlers (led by Itamar Ben Gvir) are organizing their opposition to the withdraw by moving in to areas slated for dismantling. Ofer says the formerly abandoned Palm Beach Hotel in Gaza's Gush Katif settlement is sure to become a flashpoint for clashes. For the past few years, the hotel has been occupied by surfer/squatters. But recently, entire families of extremists have taken up residence in the unoccupied sections of the hotel to make their stand against leaving Gaza. Additional text is available for this story upon request. For more information, please email Ruaridh.

UPDATE: As the withdraw date approaches, watch for coverage from ZUMA photojournalists Robert King and Nadav Neuhaus, who will join Kevin Unger, Eyal Offer and Yonathan Weitzman in Israel and Palestine.

Villaraigosa Defeats Hahn
LA Elects First Hispanic Mayor in Over a Century

Lost Angeles city councilman Antonio Villaraigosa ousted Mayor James Hahn in a landslide victory on Tuesday, capturing almost 60 percent of the vote. Although he likes to present himself as "a mayor of all Los Angeles," the symbolic significance of his origins is not lost on the Hispanic population in California, or the rest of the country. According the Los Angeles Times, "Villaraigosa's landslide represented a culmination of Latinos' growing clout in California, after decades of population gains that failed to produce a commensurate rise in political power." Industry Survey

Cal State Fullerton photojournalism instructor and ZUMA photographer Davis Barber is studying how relationships have changed between freelancers and editors following the Tasini v. New York Times ruling in June, 2001.

Photo editors and photographers are invited to participate in the study by filling out a simple online survey. The results will form part of Barber's Master's thesis: "The Tasini Effect: Photojournalism's Journey from a Handshake to the Dotted Line." Doggy Death Row - © JOHN DAVENPORT/San Antonio Express-News/ZUMA Press

Nowhere did death cast a longer shadow than at San Antonio's Animal Care and Control facility. With the highest per capita kill rate among major cities in the nation, simply entering virtually assured an animal's doom. After much public outcry, the city's notorious gas chamber killings are being phased out for more humane ways to euthanize almost 50,000 unwanted pets annually.

Find out how in-depth reporting by the San Antonio Express-News increased public scrutiny of the pound's questionable practices and provoked major changes for the better.
