Killer Trial CoverageJune 21, 2005 - PHILADELPHIA, Miss. -- A number of major court cases are dominating the headlines, and ZUMA has them covered. ZUMA's Suzi Altman and James Edward Bates have been following the trial of 80-year-old Edgar Ray Killen, the former Ku Klux Klansman, who was convicted of manslaughter today in the 1964 slayings of three civil rights workers. James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner were ambushed on June 21, 1964 and were later discovered buried in an "earthen dam" after being beaten and shot to death. The murders and notorious investigation formed the basis of the 1988 movie "Mississippi Burning." Note: Editors looking for images to illustrate the traditions and practices of the Ku Klux Klan will be interested James Edward Bates/ZUMA's ongoing Growing Up in the Klan reportage. Bates' extraordinary images demonstrate that the KKK is not an organization from a bygone era. To the contrary, the KKK is still active and a whole new generation of members is still being indoctrinated. FRESNO, Calif. - In the disturbing Wesson murder case, ZUMA is proud to be representing the coverage by our local shooter, Justin Kase Conder and Fresno's leading daily, the Fresno Bee. The culture and heritage of these special people, numbering about 3,000, became world-renowned after their miraculous escape from the December 26, 2004 tsunami, when the village elders recognized the strange retreat of the sea and warned their people run for cover. ZUMA photographer Steve Sandford spent time with the Moken documenting their various ceremonies that pay homage to the killer wave and to the spirits of their ancestors. zEvent![]() Mark your calendars for the upcoming BIG Wednesday Show on June 29th featuring a presentation by academy-award-winning photographer Douglas Kent Hall.
