The World Readies For G-8July 6, 2005 - The world is focused on Scotland where unprecedented security is being mustered up for this week's G-8 summit meeting. Topping the agenda will be aid for Africa, the world's poorest continent, and commitments toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Thousands of people have been involved in events surrounding the run-up to this big event. Over the weekend, an array of anti-globalization protests and rallies calling for an end to poverty in the developing world took place around Scotland. Some of the demonstrations turned ugly and resulted in a number of arrests. Elsewhere around the world, hundreds of top musicians and hundreds of thousands of fans gathered for Live 8, a series of free concerts organized by Bob Geldof that were intended raise awareness of Africa's poverty. Turn to ZUMA for continuing G-8 coverage as well as stills from Live 8 concerts, including the final event scheduled for today in Edinburgh. zFeaturesLondon's 2012 Olympic Win Threatens Businesses - by Dave Young/eyevine/ZUMA PressWhile Londoners celebrate their successful bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games, many local business owners are weary about their future. According to reports, London's gain could bring upheaval to over 300 businesses located on the proposed Olympic site. Photojournalist Dave Young interviewed and photographed many business owners who are being threatened with Compulsory Purchase Orders by the London Development Agency (LDA) if they don't agree to make way for developers. Cape Verde: Anniversary of Independence - by Julie Pudlowski/ZUMA Press According to a local legend, when God was satisfied with Creation, he brushed his hands together and crumbs fell from his fingers into the sea that formed the islands of Cape Verde. Off the coast of West Africa, the Cape Verde archipelago is celebrating its 30th anniversary of independence from Portugal. Although each one of the 10 islands of Cape Verde has a unique identity, people and traditions, they are all united by the same struggles, vision and passions. Shown by many as a development model for Africa, Cape Verde has achieved tremendous accomplishments over the last three decades: ninety percent of children are in school, illiteracy is becoming obsolete, and child mortality as well as starvation have been drastically reduced. The main development challenge that remains today is access to drinkable water for both irrigation and household use. Cape Verde is increasingly becoming an attractive tourist destination, offering a wide range of water sports, hiking and cultural interests.
