Crystal Meth American Tragedy

ZUMA Meth Reportage

Newsweek Meth CoverAugust 11, 2005 - LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. - In a special, in-depth nation wide zReportage report, ZUMA Press photojournalists Mark Allen Johnson, Robert King and Robin Nelson went behind the scenes to find out how America is fighting the methamphetamine epidemic.

Their collective reportage shows that meth use and has spread across every socio-economic and geographic boundary in the nation. From Arkansas to California, High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) task force agents track and bring down clandestine user labs and the more destructive "super labs"--production sites that can churn out enough meth in 12 hours to keep a small city high all day. While slowly killing meth addicts, these labs also kill the environment with hundreds of pounds of toxic byproduct generated during production.

Newsweek was the first to publish selects from ZUMA's zReportage special, America's Dirty Drug (see: August 18, 2005 Newsweek cover plus more ZUMA images inside).
