zReportage Breaking News

Lost Teen Prisoners

MANILA, Philippines--There are an estimated 68,000 children, some as young as eight years old, locked up in the Philippines' overcrowded, unsanitary adult prisons in any given year. This shocking and disturbing news is finally making headlines worldwide and ZUMA is at the forefront of breaking the story.

ZUMA Press proudly represents the exclusive, in-depth reporting by Hazel Thompson/eyevine in conjunction with Jubilee Action, a UK-based human rights charity. Their work reveals that most of the children prisoners are detained for trivial offences, like sleeping on the street, and many others are held on mere suspicion with long delays in the justice process. Even worse, these children are often crammed into cells with known pedophiles and are the main targets of rape and sexual abuse behind bars. The cells are humid, extremely hot and have poor ventilation, which enables diseases to spread quickly. Conditions amount to nothing short of abusive.

ZUMA's Rick Steele is embedded with U.S. forces in Iraq. His latest coverage shows U.S. military teaching Iraqi platoons how to conduct patrols and combat insurgencies--the goal being to prepare Iraqis to take the lead in securing their own country.

Steele shadowed Staff Sergeant Jason Bennett as he led the Iraqi soldiers in military patrols. Unlike most military leaders, Sgt. Bennet goes out on missions alone with his soldiers, putting his life in their hands in order to create bonds of trust. Click to see the camaraderie formed between Sgt. Bennett and his new soldiers.

In any given year, 68,000 children serve time in the Philippines' prisons. Most are illegally detained on trivial offenses, yet all face the same cruel, abusive fate. Crammed together with adult inmates into sweltering, standing room only cells, the juveniles live in constant fear and in conditions amounting to nothing less than torture. Thanks to the PREDA Foundation, one child at a time is being rescued.
