The 82nd faces regular dangers in this area as it's a known hotspot for Al Qaeda sympathizers and Taliban fighters, who have vowed to disrupt the upcoming legislative elections. King reports one of the greatest dangers, and the cause of the rise in recent U.S. casualties, are IEDs. The patrol he was with last night was hit by another IED but no one was hurt. Nadav
Neuhaus witnessed history as Netzarim,
the last remaining Israeli settlement in Gaza, was evacuated. Neuhaus
described the process as "very symbolic and powerful." Both
the military and the settlers were visibly shaken as members of the
religious farming community of 500 worshiped in their synagogue for
the last time, then dismantled and marched with the community's menorah. With oil prices reaching record levels, and world markets increasing their dependence on West Africa's petroleum exports, the stability of oil producing nations like Nigeria is more critical than ever. Shaky and even violent clashes between oil companies and Nigerian locals plague the industry with frequent production interruptions. ZUMA Press photographer Mark Allen Johnson spent over a month in Nigeria recently covering this conflict. What he found was country overrun by finger pointers. Local villagers complain that they have seen little benefit from the billions of dollars being made from oil production. Instead, they claim their livelihood is being stolen from them by widespread destruction of their farmland caused by repeated pipeline leaks. Meanwhile, oil companies argue they have contributed millions of dollars in contributions to the local economy. Johnson says that much of his work in Nigeria was extremely risky as he specifically tried to capture the conflict between the two sides. Local officials were very sensitive being of accused of corruption, and thus didn't want any pictures taken of their military assisting oil companies. Despite being arrested over half a dozen times during his month long assignment in the country, Johnson managed to capture very rare coverage of military escorts for petroleum industry employees and extensive pipeline leaks/environmental degradation--the root cause of so many conflicts. zMusicPersonal Portraits of Basement Jaxx by Sarah Lee/eyevine/ZUMA Press Photographer Sarah Lee just completed a portrait shoot with the Grammy award-winning, UK house music duo, Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe of Basement Jaxx. Most are illegally detained on trivial offenses, yet all face the same cruel, abusive fate. Crammed together with adult inmates into sweltering, standing room only cells, the juveniles live in constant fear and in conditions amounting to nothing less than torture. Thanks to the PREDA Foundation, one child at a time is being rescued. To license this or any other zReportage.com essay, please e-mail Sales@zReportage.com at 949.481.3747. REMINDER!!!
