Katrina's Deadly Wrath

Hurricane Katrina

August 31, 2005 - Gulf Coast, USA - With 78,000 people in shelters and thousands more waiting to be rescued, conditions are desperate in hurricane-stricken areas of the U.S. that include parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

So widespread is the destruction and chaos, that the pictures coming across our wires are very reminiscent of last year's tsunami: survivors are searching for and in some cases looting stores for food and water; entire cities are reduced to ruble; even floating bodies can be seen in floodwaters.

New Orleans is among the hardest sites with 80 percent of the city flooded with up to 20 feet of water. Today President Bush declared Hurricane Katrina "one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history."

ZUMA's wires are buzzing with continued coverage of hurricane Katrina's path of destruction by the award-winning photo teams of the Palm Beach Post, San Antonio Express-News, Toronto Star and ZUMA photographer Kelly Owen, among others.

As host of this year's highly anticipated 2005 MTV Music Awards, Diddy (Sean Combs) truly lived up to his innovative reputation by turning celebrities into runway models. Strutting their stuff down this year's "white" carpet at Miami's American Airlines Arena, Diddy had stars competing for a $50,000 fashion award. Gwen Steffani and Snoop Dog walked home with the cash prize.

Lisa O'Connor, ZUMA's lead LA entertainment photographer, and Dan Herrick, KPA-ZUMA's NYC-based shooter, flew in for the sizzling hot party. Click to view more from the white carpet and 2005 MTV Music Awards.

Los Niños de Guatemala - by Allen Sullivan/ZUMA Press

When they're not fending off abuse from local residents and police, they can be found in corners inhaling vapors from solvent-soaked balls of cloth clutched in their hands. The toxic habit gives Guatemala's street kids temporary reprieve from the cool evenings and persistent hunger pains, while it steadily rots their brain and teenage bodies.

People's War: Nepal at a Crossroad - by ZUMA photographers KASH GABRIELE TORSELLO & PETE PATTISSON

Nepal's poorest villagers sought basic rights from their government. Instead of medical services and transportation, they got a bitter fight called the "People's War." Since 1996, more than 11,000 people have been killed. Caught between two sides that demand undying loyalty, peasants in the once peaceful Himalayan Kingdom suffer the most from the power struggle between the King's Royal Nepalese Army and Chairman Prachanda's the Maoist forces.
