Katrina's Pain Continues

Hurricane Katrina

September 6, 2005 - NEW ORLEANS, LA - Hurricane Katrina's killer wrath continues to dominate the headlines this week as slow but steady progress is being made to help the 155,000 people who were displaced in the wake of Her onslaught.

With over a dozen sources on the scene, ZUMA Press has the disaster covered from all angles. Click on the links below to view more of the specific pictures described.

Tens of thousands of Katrina's refugees are now being housed in Houston's Astrodome and at other temporary shelters around the country.

Many others are defying evacuation orders and staying behind to search for missing loved ones.

Relief efforts, though slow to get off the ground, are now in full swing. Sixty thousand civilian and military personnel are helping with the rescue and recovery efforts. In fact, the Red Cross has kicked off the largest mobilization of resources in its history for a single natural disaster by providing over 200 shelters and ERVs to aid in relief efforts.

President Bush, who is being criticized for the government's slow response to the disaster, visited the devastated region again today to see for himself if everything possible was being done to help the victims.

Meanwhile, a limited number of residents are being allowed back to their wrecked homes to salvage what they can.

There is some good news to report: engineers succeeded in repairing a major breech in the levee system that caused 80 percent of the city to flood. Now comes the task of draining the toxic floodwaters that are contaminated with a hazardous mix of chemicals, garbage, corpses, and human waste.
