Hurricane Rita

September 20, 2005 - MIAMI - Fla. - Katrina's sister is coming and she is looking mean. Hurricane Rita is gaining strength and moving toward the already battered Gulf Coast states just three weeks after being devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Rita was upgraded to a category 2 today with winds at more than 100 mph, which forecasters project will gain force before hitting land. The National Hurricane Center predicts Rita could possibly be elevated to a Category 5 by the time it hits the Texas coast sometime by the end of the week. Category 5 means winds exceed 150mph. The major fear right now is that Rita could possibly go off course and strike Louisiana's ravaged coastline instead.

ZUMA's award-winning photojournalists Robert King and Kelly Owen are covering Hurricane Rita around the clock. Their work and plus more from ZUMA's king of storm coverage, The Palm Beach Post, is going up on the ZUMA's wire as fast as its shot. For specific picture requests or assignment bookings throughout Florida and the Gulf Coast, contact contact Trish Murphy or Ruaridh Stewart at 949.481.3747.

Edible Body Parts Boutique by Steve Sandford/ZUMA Press

Steve Sandford

For fun feature this Halloween, be sure to check out Steve Stanford's Edible Body Parts Boutique story. In Potharam, Thailand Sanford discovered a young 28 year-old fine arts baker that cooks up elaborate, off-the-wall body parts at his parent's bakery. The pieces are made with homemade molds that resemble anatomical body structure. Dough, cashews, chocolate, and raisins finish off the texture. Locals seem to enjoy the creepy life-like goodies as they're selling like hotcakes!

Sanford is ZUMA's main photojournalist in Thailand. He's currently working on an in-depth look at how locals are fairing in areas ravished by last year's tsunami. Stay tuned for more on this in the days ahead. Sandford is available for any and all types of assignment work in Thailand and around the region. Mexican Independence Celebrated by Jack Kurtz/ZUMA Press

Jack Kurtz

ZUMA photojournalist Jack Kurtz captured all the excitement last week in Mexico City as residents celebrated the 195th anniversary of Mexican Independence. Fireworks lit the skies and children ran the streets waving flags in jubilation.

Kurtz is currently working on a story set in a Mexico City bar where people pay to be shocked with electricity for fun. The craze, known as "toques," is all the rage among macho youth, says Kurtz. Stay tuned for more on this next week!

Iraq's Female Fighters - by NIKOS PILOS/ZUMA Press

While women's rights advocates fight to have gender equality entrenched in Iraq's new constitution, other Iraqi women are making monumental strides of their own, blazing new trails in once forbidden occupations. At the Kurdish Police Academy in northern Iraq, 21 women will graduate with university level education, a lieutenant's rank and earn more than double the average salary in that region. For these women, the socioeconomic advancement is worth the risk and, in some cases, the public disdain that accompanies their new role as police officers. To view the full story, click here.
