The Greening of America

ZUMA's Green Coverage

September 29, 2005 - This year's devastating hurricane season has lead to a renewed focus on global warming and energy conservation.

With gasoline prices skyrocketing and reports circulating that oil refineries affected by Hurricane Rita will remain closed for longer than expected, President George W. Bush called on Americans to do their part to conserve energy.

It's not surprising then that the most common request we've had this week are for shots of Smart Cars and alternative energy vehicles like hybrids, fuel cell or electric cars. ZUMA has a great collection of such work. If you can't find what you're looking for on ZUMApress.com, please feel free to e-mail Requests@ZUMApress.com and our research team will be happy to do the work for you.

Antarctic Global Warming Research

Editors are also reminded that ZUMA represents an exceptional reportage package (photo essay with text) called Global Warming Beacon by Gary Braasch, one of the foremost environmental photographers today. Braasch traveled on a study mission to Antarctica. His story describes how scientists confirm their worst fears about global warming by studying the fragile--ecology. What happens here not only impacts the whole Antarctic ecosystem but the rest of the world's oceans and climates. With news out today that Arctic ice has shrunk for the fourth year in a row, Braasch's reportage is particularly timely.

Electric Shock for Fun!? - Jack Kurtz/ZUMA Press

Jack Kurtz

Editors looking for someone to cover boarder issues next week can contact ZUMA to book Jack Kurtz on assignment. Kurtz will be in Bisbee, Arizona adding to his ongoing reportage on illegal immigrants and U.S.-Mexico border. He has made arrangements to ride with both the Border Patrol and Cochise County (AZ) Sheriff's Department. This coverage will be made available via ZUMApress.com, but for specific assignment needs please contact Trish Murphy at 949.481.3747.

Kurtz just finished a feature on a jolting past time called "toques" that's popular among youth in Mexico. At many Mariachi bars, traditional cantinas community fairs and bars like Tenampa, patrons voluntarily pay up to two dollars to get shocked by electricity! Tomas Anaya, the shock worker at Tenampa who inherited his shock box and spot in the bar from his father, says he earns about $80 per week shocking patrons--a fairly decent salary by local standards!

To view some of Kurtz other essays, see Workers' Death Path and Law and Order Nogales Style.
