Mean Season Continues

Hurricane Wilma

October 26, 2005 - MIAMI - Editors looking for high impact coverage of South Florida's big weather nightmares need look no further! Despite the gusting winds and torrential rains, Palm Beach Post's prolific team of photojournalists braved the worst of Hurricane Wilma to deliver powerful coverage of her deadly path of destruction.

And the coverage doesn't stop there! Be it in the air or on the ground, Post shooters are taking the time to capture what one editor described it as "a blender that chopped up large sections of the state."

When it rains, it pours! by Allen Sullivan/ZUMA Press

Allen Sullivan

PANABAJ, Guatemala - Like Florida, but perhaps much worse off is Guatemala, a country still struggling to reach survivors following the massive mudslides triggered by Hurricane Stan earlier in the month. More than 100 communities are still completely inaccessible, while others were leveled by mud and are now being declared mass gravesites. ZUMA photojournalist Allen Sullivan reports that some foreign aid is trickling through however. In Tzamchaj, for example, residents and NGO volunteers are working hard to build enough housing and common work, cooking and cleaning areas for 300 families. Despite increased monitoring and sanitation efforts across the country, China reported its third outbreak of bird flu this week. Meanwhile, fear of the spreading virus prompted Turkish poultry farmers to slaughter hundred of chickens (photos by UPPA/ZUMA). Civil Rights Icon Passes

Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks, the courageous woman whose 1955 protest action in Alabama marked the start of the modern U.S. civil rights movement, died yesterday at the age of 92. Mrs. Parks' refusal to give up her seat to a white man on a bus prompted a mass black boycott of buses led by Baptist minister Martin Luther King Jr. His protest movement brought about the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which outlawed racial discrimination in the U.S. Click to see more of Rosa Parks.

Cary Verse is one of only three men who've graduated form the California Department of Mental Health's rehabilitation program. He's been chemically castrated and is required to take medication to reduce his testosterone levels. Although he lives outside the confines of a formal correctional facility or mental institution, he has to meet a long list of requirements to maintain his freedom. Verse must keep a journal of his whereabouts and activities, get psychological therapy on a regular basis and be supervised 24 hours a day by a GPS unit (Global Positioning System) operated by Liberty Health Care.
