San Diego Union-Tribune and ZUMA Join Forces

San Diego Union-Tribune

February 9, 2006 - DANA POINT, CA - ZUMA Press, the largest independent picture agency, and the San Diego Union-Tribune (SDU-T), the award-winning Southern California daily, today formalized a longstanding relationship between the two companies. ZUMA now has worldwide syndication rights to the paper's daily picture production and archive, dating back to mid 1800s.

Included are years of news, features, sports, entertainment, in-depth investigative photo essays, and more! The SDU-T photo team is as strong as ever with a long list of award-winning photographers on board including: K.C. Alfred, Jim Baird, Nelvin Cepeda, Eduardo Contreras, Laura Embry, John Gastaldo, Roni Galgano, John Gibbins, Earnie Grafton, Sean Haffey, Don Kohlbauer, Nancee Lewis, Scott Linnett, Howard Lipin, John McCutchen, Charlie Neuman, Crissy Pascual, Peggy Peattie, Nadia Borowski Scott and Dan Trevan, to name just a few.

"Our photographers are some of the best and most passionate shooters in the country, if not the world," said Andy Hayt, Director of Photography at SDU-T. "Our aim is to get their pictures published and seen by readers everywhere. I'm confident ZUMA Press will make that happen," he added.

ZUMA Press began representing SDU-T on a case-by-case basis in the late 1990s and had major success syndicating stories of national and international interest. Some of those include the 2003 California wild fires, the Santana High School shooting, Operation Enduring Freedom coverage from Afghanistan and Super Bowl XXXVII action.

"A significant amount of news comes out of the San Diego area since it's situated between Camp Pendleton--the nation's busiest military base--and Mexico," said ZUMA Press director, Scott Mc Kiernan. "We are very proud to represent the ongoing, daily picture production of the San Diego Union-Tribune and are confident ZUMA's editorial clients will welcome the coverage," he said.

About the San Diego Union Tribune

The San Diego Union-Tribune (SDU-T) is the product of a merger of The San Diego Union, founded in 1868, and the Evening Tribune, founded 1895. Today, The San Diego Union-Tribune is the county's largest circulation daily. The paper has a long tradition of excellence in journalism that has been recognized by numerous industry awards including two Pulitzer Prizes. Most recently, the U-T's prolific "Firestorm 2003" images raised $75,000 for the San Diego Foundation's After the Fires Fund. The SDU-T received the James S. Copley Special Award of Honor for Meritorious Service in recognition of this community giving.

The SDU-T, the county's oldest employer, has a daily circulation of nearly 355,000 and Sunday sales of nearly 445,000. The 136-year-old newspaper serves San Diego County and portions of Imperial Valley, Riverside and Orange counties. In addition, the SDU-T publishes Enlace, a weekly Spanish-language news publication serving San Diego's substantial Hispanic population, and operates SignOnSanDiego.com. With 30 million page views and more than 2 million unique users each month, SignOnSanDiego.com is the leading online source for local news, entertainment information and classifieds in San Diego.
