Victory Achieved

July 3, 2006 - Turn to ZUMA Press for the only pictures showing the historic achievement of American explorers LONNIE DUPRE and ERIC LARSEN as they completed the first successful summer expedition to the North Pole.

The duo departed from Ellesmere Island, Canada on May 1st and traveled 700 milies on a Greenpeace mission to spotlight the dangers of global warming on the polar bear. The explorers have also been collecting important data on ice and snow during their trek for the National Snow and Ice Center.

Railway to Tibet Opens

Another historic achievement took place this weekend. The world's highest railway opened for business linking eager tourists in China's north western province of Qinghai with the Tibetan capital of Lhasa. The Qinghai-Tibet Railway is the final stretch of track that now connects Beijing with Tibet. Almost 600 miles of the route hovers at 13,000 feet above sea level with the highest point reaching 16,636 feet--that's at least 650 feet higher than the Peruvian railway in the Andes, which was formerly the world's highest altitude railway.
