ZUMA Shooters Capture Mideast HistoryJuly 20, 2005 - San Clemente, Calif. - ZUMA Press photojournalists Nadav Neuhaus and Robert King are off on international assignments to bring home coverage of history in the making. Nadav, an Israeli native most recently based in New York, returned to his homeland to complete perhaps the final chapter in his 15-year reportage on unrest in Gaza. The star shooter will tap his unparalleled access, photojournalism skills and long-cultivated military contacts to document: the last days of Israeli occupation in Gaza (ordinary life under extraordinary circumstances); settler reaction--resistance/compliance to military withdrawal; Israeli Army Special Ops, and more. Nadav is best known for his powerful coverage of the infamous 2002 siege of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. While on assignment for Newsweek, Nadav was the only journalist who produced images of Israeli forces surrounding the church. His work made Newsweek's cover and ran across multiple pages inside that issue. He is also known for his coverage of Israeli Special Forces deployed to destroy Gaza's underground tunnels. This work was published extensively during the explosive summer of 2004, when a series of attacks on soldiers patrolling the border led to a string of military deaths that heightened debate about the Israeli presence in Gaza. Nadav's essay, Unearthing Gaza's Tunnels showcased on ZUMA's elite photojournalism site zReportage.com. ZUMA's Robert King, who also has over a decade of experience covering wars and political unrest around the globe, is now in southern Afghanistan where he is working side-by-side the 82nd Airborne and the Afghan army. Shooting video and stills, King will follow the search for al-Qaeda and Taliban remnants. He will also document efforts to secure a safe environment for Afghanis to vote in this fall's upcoming parliamentary elections, and will stay through September to cover the birth of its new government. He is believed to be responsible for the Russell Square Underground bomb, where at least 21 are confirmed dead and hundreds injured. Pictured here with his British wife SAMANTHA SHERAFIYAH LEWTHWAITE and their baby, ABDULLAH, Germaine, is believed to be a Jamaican-born, British resident who converted to Islam a few years ago. DNA testing of his remains is currently underway to confirm his identity. For licensing information, please call Trish Murphy at 949.481.3747. "When Kash tackles a project, he does it from his heart, and keeps going until he sees it through to completion, says Scott Mc Kiernan, director and founder of ZUMA Press. "His dedication is admirable," he says. Torsello is the author, photographer and publisher of The Heart of Kashmir (ISBN 0 9542245 0 7), a critically acclaimed book that was launched in 2003 at the House of Commons and at The House of Lords in London, and became a finalist at The British Book Design and Production Awards that year. The book is a product of his 10 years of work in the disputed region of Kashmir. His images and words provide insight on how locals survive under the shadow of constant humiliation and suffering. This reportage to be loaded into ZUMApress.com in the weeks ahead. In addition to Kashmir, Torsello has produced many other significant essays around the world including Nepal, the Himalayan Kingdom that is spiraling into a cycle of political instability and poverty. He spent time with Maoist rebel forces who, he says, dedicate their lives to the fight against poverty and the overall injustice of their country's regime.
